About Gulf Highlands
Gulf Highlands, Alabama is an unincorporated community on the southern shores of the state, just west of the Florida state line. Things to do in Gulf Highlands
In the Gulf Highlands area, you’re going to get a great, authentic beach vacation. Gulf Highlands sits right on the southernmost part of Alabama and has great beaches with access to the Gulf of Mexico. You can spend a lot of time enjoying the beach, whether you want to lay out and bathe in the sun or swim and enjoy the waves rolling in from the Gulf. If you’re visiting in the months of March or April, be wary of the spring break crowds that come rolling in from all over the country. In the other months, though, the beaches aren’t packed and you can enjoy some time relaxing. Other than sitting on the beach, there are plenty of fun things to do in the area. Nature lovers will enjoy hiking on seven different trails at the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, which has beautiful wildlife, freshwater marshes and coastal hardwood swamps. The trails make up more than 15 miles and take you through the Gulf State Park that runs through the Gulf Highlands and Gulf Shores areas. Take a historical tour of Fort Morgan, which has been an on-again off-again military fort since the 1500s. There is a lot of rich history here, as it was instrumental in the Battle of Mobile Bay in the American Civil War. The whole family will have fun at Adventure Island Amusement Park, located a short drive away in Orange Beach. The park has go-karts, bumper boats, laser tag, mini golf and even an erupting volcano replica. If you’re interested in golf, there are many great golf courses all over the Gulf Highlands area including the popular Kiva Dunes Golf Club, Gulf Shores Golf Club, and more.

If you want to go to a bigger city during your stay, a great option is to visit Pensacola, Florida, just an hour from Gulf Highlands. It’s a historic beach city that has a lot of Naval history. You can visit the Naval Air Station Pensacola, which offers great attractions for visitors including shows from the Blue Angels fighter jet pilots who put on great spectacles, the National Museum of Naval Aviation, as well as Fort Barrancas, which is still in stunning condition. Consider visiting the Pensacola Museum of Art, and the beautiful beaches of Pensacola, which have soft, sugar white sand.
