Bergen Information
About Bergen
Bergen, a city on the west coast of Norway, lies in Hordaland and is the second largest city in the country. With mountains lining the city, Bergen is a little warmer than you would imagine for the Scandinavian country. With art, music, and lots of fish — Bergen is a cultural hub in Norway, and a joy to explore and walk around.
Things to do in Bergen
The Bergen Art Museum has one of the most expansive collections in Scandinavia, featuring lots of renaissance and contemporary pieces — as well as work by Edvard Munch. Bergen’s outdoor fish market is a spot mixed with tourists and locals alike to admire one of Norway’s prize resources. Enjoy free samples while you explore the piles of whale and salmon. St Mary’s Church is the oldest building that remains in the city, and dates back to the 12th century — definitely worth a visit, and beautiful to see. With incredible cultural festivals, see the Nattjazz, Bergenfest, or the Bergen International Festival in the city. Bergen has an underground music scene also, meaning that there are live performances to check out all over the place.
Day trips from Bergen
You can even get out of the city to the beach during the summer months as a day trip. Head out to Arboretet at Milde, or Kyrkjetangen. Spend the day by the water, and even at the old bath houses. For a hiking trip, Climb Mount Fløyen, which is accessible from downtown. The top of the mountain is about a one mile walk, but the next walk will get you up to Mount Rundemanen — make a day of it and admire the city from above! Mount Ulriken is the highest point in Bergen, and the hike takes five hours, for the more adventurous.
Bergen accommodations
Bergen is divided into eight boroughs, with suburbs heading out of the city. There are all kinds of different neighbourhoods for you to explore, from Downtown to the calmer areas. Tripping has hundreds of rentals for you to choose from, whether you’re looking for a stylish apartment or a traditional Norwegian house. All, naturally, in the typically Scandinavian streamlined style.
Transportation in Bergen
Bergen Airport is the best way of getting into the country, while alternatively you could sail into Bergen Port — the largest seaport in Norway. Bergen has a commuter rail, as well as both a tram and a trolley/bus. With great public transportation, a car isn’t necessary when travelling around Bergen. There’s also a railway service that can get you into Bergen, the Norwegian State Railways. The city is very pedestrian friendly, so you can explore the nooks and crannies on foot.
