About Invercargill

Situated among some of New Zealand’s most fertile farmland, Invercargill isn’t just an agricultural hotspot, it’s also the commercial mecca for the Southland, New Zealand’s southernmost region. Invercargill’s plethora of art galleries and historic buildings draw visitors in and keep locals happy. Explore New Zealand like a local when you visit all the local businesses and attractions that make Invercargill a place rich in culture and character.

Things to do in Invercargill

If you’re a car buff, Invercargill has a surprise in store for you. Check out the Bill Richardson Transport World, where a private collection of over 300 vehicles including old Model T’s and vintage 1930s V8’s. Transport World started with Bill Richardson, a local businessman and car collector. He amassed a collection of over 150 vehicles during his life, and when he passed away, his daughter sought to bring that collection to the public. Today, visitors can explore the growing car collection, enjoy a bite at the on-site restaurant, attend an event, and let your kids learn through play in the Construction Zone Lego Room. Transport World also displays some of the renowned pieces of wearable art that come out of Southland’s annual FibreOctave Wearable Art and Musical Extravaganza. This place is a must-see while in Invercargill. Spend the day exploring the local attractions in Invercargill, and start at Invercargill Brewery. This brewery, opened by a former professional Rugby player, has been applauded for its tasty beers (and a few ciders, too). It’s outgrown its old location, and since 2013, it’s called a beautifully remodeled fabric warehouse its home. Stop in for a flight or a pint of downright delicious beer. Next, stop in at a few of the art galleries that help make Invercargill’s culture rich. The Southland Museum and Art Gallery is the major cultural organization for the Southland region. The museum itself is located inside the largest pyramid in the Southern hemisphere and the live displays of artwork are top notch. Anderson Park Art Gallery holds over 800 pieces of artwork from early colonial to contemporary New Zealand artists. It’s located inside a Georgian-style manor and its grounds are impeccably manicured and landscaped. After you’ve gotten your art fix, head to the Invercargill Water Tower, which is a beautiful example of Victorian architecture. Its stunning appearance has pleased visitors since 1888.

Day Trips from Invercargill

If you’re up for a drive, make the 2 hour and 45-minute trek to Fiordland National Park, northwest of Invercargill. The park, established in 1952, covers nearly 3 million acres. With that much land, there are bound to be many habitats and wildlife living in it. Since many plants and animals have developed in isolation, you’ll get a glimpse of many that have evolved to be completely unique to the area. The park is home to the Kakapo, the world’s only flightless parrot, and the Takahe, a bird thought to have been extinct for more than 40 years before being discovered in the park in 1948. Fiordland is part of the Te Wahipounamu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its unmatched natural beauty is an incredible site to see. Take a hike on one of the park’s many trails, and you’ll be hiking in what many call the Walking Capital of the World. Kayak in the Sounds of the park, explore the Glow Worm Caves, or even discover rare Black Coral by visiting the Underwater Observatory.
