Hastings Information
About Hastings
A city surrounded by rural suburbs, Hastings is a typical New Zealand metropolis. Outside of the city all kinds of fruits and vegetables are grown, meaning that your meals will always be fresh and delicious. Sunny Hastings doesn't have the traditional attractions of a city, as it focuses more on the outdoors and activities.
Things to do in Hastings
In Hastings, your number one priority will be to visit one of the city’s many wineries. Try the Craggy Range Vineyard in a beautiful setting, Ngatarawa Wines with its horse-head label, or Sileni Estates Winery that can host large functions. The Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market is a must to experience all of the amazing New Zealand-grown fruits and vegetables. This market is the country’s oldest and largest for fresh produce. Find meat, cheese, and of course kiwi fruit at your disposal. Hastings has one of the largest waterparks in the country, appropriately named Splash Planet. The waterpark is ideal for bringing your raucous family, and a great way to cool off in the heat. Check out the Hastings town clock from the 30s, as it’s become an art deco icon. The surreal clock looms over the sculptures of classic New Zealand sheep.
Day trips from Hastings
Take a trip to Hastings’ “Twin City,” Napier. Napier is just twenty minutes away in the car or via public transportation in Hawke’s Bay. Napier is known for its Art Deco style, and hosts the Tremains Art Deco Festival every year in February. With vintage car parades, concerts, and thousands of festival-goers dressed in 1930s style — you’ll have gone back in time! Napier is also known for its wineries, so you’ll have to visit the Mission Estate Winery for a tasting. The grounds are gorgeous, and make sure to take a bottle or two home with you. The Napier National Aquarium is right by the water, and also makes for a great trip with kids.
Hastings accommodations

It’s likely you’ll find a rental with a pool as is tradition in New Zealand, and the suburban houses are sure to have great gardens for you to unwind in.
Transportation in Hastings
The State Highway connects Hastings to Napier, giving you an ideal connection between the twin cities. The Palmerston North-Gisborne Line (PNGL) railway runs through the centre of Hastings, and InterCity bus provides rides in and out of the city. If you’re flying in, the Hawke’s Bay Airport is at Napier which is still pretty convenient. Traffic is usually good making the drive to Hastings easy, but walking and cycling are popular in the city for a reason. Enjoy the beauty of the land in Hastings!
