Tauranga Information

About Tauranga

Settled in the late 13th century by Maori and established in the 19th century by Europeans, Tauranga is home to many beautiful and historic attractions. Its population of just over 134,000 make it the fifth most populous city in New Zealand. Tauranga is situated on the Bay of Plenty, giving visitors plenty of spectacular views to enjoy. The city boasts New Zealand’s only active marine volcano, food and art festivals, and plenty of live entertainment.

Things to do in Tauranga

White Island is a must-see attraction during you vacation in Tauranga. Be it by boat or helicopter, you should take a tour of New Zealand’s only active marine volcano. White Island is around 1.2 miles wide and the volcano, though most of its activity is deep underwater, rises to over 1,000 feet. Walk across the island and explore its unique landscape, a mixture of geothermal steam, bubbling mud pools, and the remains of a destroyed sulfur mining factory. Entertainment is around every corner in Tauranga. The Bay of Plenty Garden and Art Festival takes place every November in Tauranga. This four-day celebration delights festival-goers with an array of garden displays, exhibitions, concept gardens, and a café. The Baycourt Community and Arts Centre hosts concerts, plays, and a variety of other events. Check their calendar to see what’s coming up during your vacation. Mills Reef Winery is a lovely place to spend a day sipping on some delicious local wines. They even have a restaurant in case you’re hungry. Tauranga has no shortage of green space. It houses a handful of parks, the most popular being Memorial Park. Here, The Extravaganza takes place. This is a unique market and festival that tours around New Zealand, providing free admission to patrons. Live music, handcrafted goods, local foods, and so much more are available inside the festival. You could easily spend the day perusing the market and enjoying the sunshine outdoors. Another place locals love is the Te Puna Quarry Park. The place has over 30 permanent, hand-carved sculptures and pieces of art, including a huge dragon that blends into a staircase wall and snakes down the stairs as you descend. What once was a rock quarry in the early 1900s, Te Puna Quarry Park has since become a local and national treasure and popular destination. With so many things to do, you might forget that Tauranga has more than a few gorgeous beaches to enjoy. Waihi Beach, Ocean Beach, Papamoa, and Mount Maunganui are all spectacular choices if you’re looking for a place to catch some rays. The beaches all have long stretches of coastline so there’s no crowds to compete with for a spot in the sand. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Day Trips from Tauranga

Auckland is located a little over 2 hours and 45 minutes from Tauranga and a drive to the city is a great way to spend the day. Auckland is the most populous and largest urban area in New Zealand. It’s situated up against two bays—Coxs Bay and St. Marys Bay—making it feel like the city is surrounded by water. Arts and culture are a huge part of Auckland. It hosts the Auckland Festival, the New Zealand International Comedy Festival and the New Zealand International Film Festival. The Auckland Art Gallery is worth a visit, as it houses the most extensive collection of national and international art in the country. Catch a sporting event at Eden park, New Zealand’s largest stadium. You might be visiting on a day when cricket takes over the field or, if you’re really lucky, when the beloved All Blacks rugby club plays. Either way, the stadium has been around since 1900 and, though it’s been redeveloped, frequently hosts both cricket and rugby World Cup games on its historic field.

Transportation in Tauranga

Tauranga Airport is located right in the heart of the city. To fly into it, though, you’ll need a connecting flight from Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch. From the airport, you can take a short cab ride to your accommodations. Some tour companies also provide rides to and from the airport, so check in and see if that’s something you want to book. Rental cars are another option, but unless you’re traveling extensively around New Zealand, you most likely won’t need one. There are buses that travel throughout Tauranga and some that even go to Auckland, so your day trip can be done via bus, too.
