Things to do in Marrakech
In the Medina, the old historic district of Marrakech, you can find Djemma El-Fna as the heart of Marrakech nightlife. Very different from our own nightlife, the square comes alive with dancing, hypnotic melodies, beating drums, snake charmers, and storytellers. During the day, you can find stalls and henna tattoo artists. The Souks (markets) near Djemma El-Fna have lines and lines of markets where you can buy Moroccan tea, colourful spices, and souvenirs. The Koutoubia Mosque is iconic, and beautifully lit at night. As a religious building it has its purpose, but it also has interesting architecture to admire. The Bahia Palace, meaning “beautiful,” has guided tours as well as roaming stray cats. Explore the garden and the ornamented interiors. The Palmeraie is an oasis stretch outside of the city, where you can see thousands of palm trees, and even go for a camel ride!
Day trips from Marrakech
Marrakech is near some incredible day trip destinations. Visit the windy desert at the Erg Chebbi or Erg Chegaga dunes. Enjoy the incredible views in the hot deserts, and arrive conveniently by bus or rental car. Next, cool off at the beaches of Agadir on the Atlantic coast. The port city is two and a half hours away from Marrakech. The relaxing beaches are surrounded by restaurants, bars and clubs — with more of a resort vibe. Take a trip to Amizmiz in the high Atlas Mountains. The largest Souks in the mountains can be found at Amizmiz on Tuesdays. The markets are less touristy as authentic mountain towns, and will get you away from the bustle of Marrakech.
