Veracruz Information

About Veracruz

Located in the Mexican state of Veracruz, the city of Veracruz lies along the sandy shores of the Gulf of Mexico. It is a major port city for the state and is also the most populous city in it. In fact, it is Mexico’s oldest, largest, and most historically significant port, as it was built during Spanish colonization after Spanish explorer Hernan Cortes founded the city. Today, you can explore cultural museums, historic fortresses, and soak in the sun on some warm beaches. Take a vacation to Veracruz city and experience the oldest port city in Mexico!

Things to do in Veracruz

For all the history buffs, Veracruz has a treat in store for you. Head to San Juan de Ulua and explore this 1500s Spanish floating fortress that once used to protect the port city from invaders. During its lifetime, the fortress saw more silver and gold come through its walls than any other place on earth. It has three-foot stone walls and nearly 250 cannons. After it was captured by the United States in the Mexican-American War, the fortress went on to become a prison, and some of its prison cells can still be seen today. San Juan de Ulua sits on an island just off the coast of Veracruz and can easily be visited in a day. Don’t forget to bring your camera to take pictures of this truly historic fortress.

The Baluarte de Santiago, a fort built in medieval times to help defend the port city, can be visited free of charge. Although tourists cannot enter the building, the crumbling, old structure can be viewed from the outside. When you’re done at the fort, head to the Museo de la Ciudad de Veracruz and explore the city’s past through artifacts, cultural dance shows, events, and more. Finally, hit the Zocalo. This is the city’s unofficial outdoor playground where organized events and unrehearsed gatherings often take place. By night, the Zocalo turns into a hodgepodge of musicians, night owls, and party-goers. Don’t miss out on this unique, central area of Veracruz.

Day Trips from Veracruz

If you have a whole day and don’t mind the drive, make the four-hour trek to the El Tajin Ruins. From the early 9th to 13th century, El Tajin became the most important center in northeast Mesoamerica. The ruins are incredible to see, so it’s easy to understand why they’re a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore this pre-Hispanic city and walk among ruins that have been in existence for thousands of years. Make sure you see the “Pyramid of the Niches”, a work of ancient Mexican and American architecture. This day trip may take up your whole day, but it’s guaranteed to be worth it!
