Puerto Peñasco Information
About Puerto Peñasco
Puerto Peñasco, also known as ‘Rocky Point,” is a city in northwest Mexico, about 62 miles from the border with the United States. In the Sonora state, this former fishing village has had a boom after it caught the eyes of some developers in the 1990s. The city was originally chosen to be developed in the style of Cancun after overfishing and pollution had contributed to the decline of the town’s local economy. What lies there now is a very attractive vacation and adventure spot for snowbirds or really anyone just looking to enjoy a less-crowded beach town.
Things to do in Puerto Peñasco
The resorts in Puerto Peñasco provide luxury and convenience, but there are lots of activities to do outside of swimming in the pool or gorging at the buffet. Due to its proximity to the beach, water sports are a huge draw in this former fishing town. Lay back on the sands with your plunder of clams at Cholla Bay after a day of exploring the Old Port, or chose one of the sunset cruise or snorkeling, like EcoFun Rentals or Del Mar Charters. Take wing and leave your worldly cares behind on an ultralight flight, and don’t forget to soothe your poor nerves with a stop at Manny’s Tequila Factory. Cast your line and get your sport fishing fix. Admire the sea lions of Bird Island, lay out on Playa Hermosa, or give up on the water altogether and explore El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve. Top off your day with a visit to La Spa and truly treat yourself.

However, if you’re willing to endure the drive time, Phoenix and Mexicali both have a lot to offer, especially if it’s your first time visiting.

Transportation in Puerto Peñasco
The best way to access Puerto Peñasco is by flying in through the local private airport, Mar de Cortés International Airport. It is also known as Puerto Penasco International Airport. Due to the city’s proximity to several cities in Arizona, like Phoenix, many companies offer shuttle rides across the border or from the airport. The best way to get around is by car or taxi, but walking is a reliable method too, especially around the resorts.
