About Melaka

Located about a 3-hour bus ride from the capital of Kuala Lumpur, Melaka (also known as Malacca) became part of the Malayan Union in 1946. On April 15, 1989, Melaka was declared a historical city and listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site in July 2008. The city is rich in Malaysian culture and sits on the southwestern coast of the Malay Peninsula. Temperatures in Melaka are hot and humid year-round, which makes for perfect traveling conditions any time of the year. Malaysian is spoken widely throughout Melaka, but English is used by many business and tourist sectors.

The preserved town center houses the historic 16th century St. Paul’s Church. Public squares and gardens add extra beauty to this coast-side city. Night markets can be found during the weekends along Jonker Walk in Chinatown. This market snakes through the center of Chinatown and tourists and locals alike can buy cheap gifts and delicious food. The Melaka River Cruise is a hot attraction for tourists, as it runs from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Since the river is dotted with bars, restaurants, and shops, many visitors choose to go on the cruise in the evening to experience the nightlife from a short distance.

The volcanic rock inside the park even dates back to 240 million years. Located about 2 hours and 45 minutes away from Melaka, the park can be challenging to get to via public transportation. For some famous “cendol”, a sweet snack made from rice flour and coconut milk, head to Aunty Koh. The owner of the place washes, shreds and squeezes coconuts every morning to prepare for a day of selling cendol. She usually sells out by 12:30 p.m., so get in line early! For something more savory, check out Sun May Hiong Satay House. Their pork style satay is rumored to be among the best in Melaka. It’s a must-stop for visitors!

Transportation in Melaka

The recommended way to get to Melaka is via Kuala Lumpur. Fly into the airport there and take a taxi or hop on a bus. Buses run throughout the day starting at 7 a.m. While in Melaka, use taxis or buses since there is no rail system. The Panorama Bus is the public bus system and ride fares are reasonably cheap. Trishaws (rickshaws) are another option, but rides are not reliable and it is the most expensive transportation choice in Melaka, often taking mostly tourists.
