The city is rich in Malaysian culture and sits on the southwestern coast of the Malay Peninsula. The preserved town center houses the historic 16th century St. Paul’s Church. Public squares and gardens add extra beauty to this coast-side city. Night markets can be found during the weekends along Jonker Walk in Chinatown. This market snakes through the center of Chinatown and tourists and locals alike can buy cheap gifts and delicious food. The Melaka River Cruise is a hot attraction for tourists, as it runs from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Since the river is dotted with bars, restaurants, and shops, many visitors choose to go on the cruise in the evening to experience the nightlife from a short distance.

For some famous “cendol”, a sweet snack made from rice flour and coconut milk, head to Aunty Koh. The owner of the place washes, shreds and squeezes coconuts every morning to prepare for a day of selling cendol. She usually sells out by 12:30 p.m., so get in line early! For something more savory, check out Sun May Hiong Satay House. Their pork style satay is rumored to be among the best in Melaka. It’s a must-stop for visitors!

Trishaws (rickshaws) are another option, but rides are not reliable and it is the most expensive transportation choice in Melaka, often taking mostly tourists.
