Amalfi Information

About Amalfi

South of Naples and tucked into gleaming cliffs, Amalfi and other hamlets on the Amalfi Coast are tried-and-true destinations for authentic Mediterranean flavor. The whole municipality is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a hotbed of history and culture: over time, famous composers, royalty, celebrities and great Roman leaders have all passed through this flower-lined, deeply religious community (holy processions still take place on sacred occasions). There’s traditionally-made pasta dishes, tasty pizzas like no other and unusually large lemon trees rooted between gardens—what’s not to love about the birthplace of limoncello?

Things to do in Amalfi

When in Italy, you simply must gaze in awe at the Romanesque/Baroque duomos, otherwise known as cathedrals—and Duomo di Amalfi, dedicated to Andrew the Apostle, brings out the best of Catholicism’s architectural feats. In Amalfi’s central landmark and historic site, there’s the Basilica of the Crucifix, St. Andrew’s crypt, powerful mosaics and a picturesque garden. Amalfi is a gorgeous city for walking, as streets split off into tunnels to allow for am unfettered look at the Tyrrhenian Sea. There’s no shortage of street vendors, local boutique stores, waterfront bars and, of course, gelato shops. For those immune to seasickness, book a boat or yacht tour of the Amalfi Coast to get the opposing view of such a beautiful area, including the small coves around the edges of town and beyond.

Day Trips from Amalfi

Come view the spectacular ruins of one of history’s most famous natural disasters: the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which left the cities of Pompeii, modern-day Ercolano and Castellammare di Stabia suffocating in heaps of ash. Depending on where in the eruption zone you’re most interested in visiting, you can take the train or car and make a fantastic day trip, whether it’s a self-guided stroll around preserved bath houses and frescoes, or going with a group to learn more context about life in antiquity. A more self-contained getaway is the town of Sorrento, accessible by driving just over an hour west on the highly scenic Amalfi Coast Road, or SS-163, where tourists can taste authentic limoncello, dig into fresh seafood and take in the beauty of a local cathedral.

Amalfi Accommodations

At varying prices, rentals on the Amalfi Coast offer gorgeous views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, swimming pools and often complimentary parking. Colorfully furnished cottages and villas have timelessly beautiful decor and patios for relishing in the fresh air, getting a nice tan or enjoying a glass of wine. Even the least expensive rental accommodations feel luxurious and are within short distance of dining, swimming and other activities.

Transportation in Amalfi

Any flight to Amalfi will arrive at Naples International Airport (NAP), which is a 40-minute train ride with Italiarail to the station at Vietri sul Mare. Since the drive from Vietri sul Mare takes 40 minutes by car to Amalfi, it perhaps might be a better financial decision to rent a car in Naples and drive an hour and a half to Amalfi. This will enable drivers brave enough to navigate Italian roads to see sights around the area more freely. Otherwise, you’re stuck with local cab fares.
