Things to do in St. John’s
St. John’s is full of exciting city life in the low-key Newfoundland. See St. John’s from Signal Hill, and look across at the colourful houses of Jelly Bean Row. Signal Hill is also home to the North Head Trail, with amazing views of the coast and ocean. Downtown St. John’s, with its brightly coloured buildings, house all kinds of eclectic shops and restaurants to match. Water Street and Duckworth Street are popular, and George Street is the hub for nightlife. George Street hosts festivals such as Mardi Gras, and features local live-music. Pippy Park, in the east end of the city, is one of Canada’s largest urban parks. Explore the trains and protected habitats. Bowring Park in Waterford Valley is another beautiful spot, with iconic statues and scenic duck ponds.
Day trips from St. John’s
St. John’s is one of the most popular spots in Newfoundland, however there’s so much to see in the area. A two and a half hour drive from St. John’s will get you to Terra Nova National Park. Walk the snaking Coastal Trail to Headquarters Wharf as you follow the shoreline. Kayak at Newman Sound, or take a boat tour to see bald eagles, whales and icebergs. There are campgrounds all around if you want to turn your day trip into a camping adventure. Saint Pierre and Miquelon are small islands a ferry-ride away from Newfoundland, or a 45 minute flight if you want to travel quickly. These French islands still speak the language, and are technically a part of France. Miquelon is the larger island. Miquelon’s remote and beautiful landscape is perfect for fishing. Enjoy the French culture along with the Canadian nature.
