This oasis between Guatemala, Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea is a glorious mesh of cultures.
Things to do in Belize City
Belize City is a hugely popular holiday destination, with flawless beaches. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest of its kind in the world, after Australia’s. With incredible corals, and hundreds of varieties of colourful fish, the Barrier Reef is Belize’s top activity. The Barrier Reef is ideal for scuba diving and snorkelling. The Split is a beach with a narrow channel that splits Caye Caulker. The clean sparkling waters, and lack of seaweed, make it one of the most incredible areas of swimming. The bars right by The Split are always bumpin’, making it a fun and festive party spot. Placencia strip is another popular area, giving you that classic beach holiday vibe. Placencia is easily accessible by car, and perfectly relaxing with its white sands.
Day trips from Belize City
There are plenty of incredible activities just a few hours away from Belize City. The Mayan ruins of Caracol are three hours away from Belize. What was once a powerful Mayan city is now weighed down with the jungle near Guatemala. As the largest Mayan site in Belize, Caracol and its temples are a must-see. Bring food and water to keep you going, although there are museums and visitor areas to centre you. It is the jungle after all! Cayo, or San Ignacio, is two hours away from Belize. Zip lining and canoeing are popular, and the inland town is complimented by the jungle. In Cayo, Xunantunich is another Mayan site, most easily accessible in Belize. An archeological dream, climb to the top of the mesa of El Castillo for one of the best views around.
