Adelaide Information

About Adelaide

Expanding from the coastline to foothills, Adelaide is the state of South Australia’s capital city. Before being proclaimed as a British settlement in the early 1800s, Adelaide was home to the native Kaurna Aboriginal people. Moreover, the majority of the city consisted of sand hills, bushland, and swamps before being planned. As Adelaide started to become developed, the city was designed with five public squares in the city center and several parks encircling it. The weather in Adelaide is reminiscent of a Mediterranean climate with short, mild winters and very warm, dry summers.

Things to do in Adelaide

Adelaide is renowned for its vibrant events and institutions celebrating arts and culture. The annual Adelaide Festival of Arts is considered one of the most prominent arts celebrations in the world. Comprising multiple events featuring theatre, dance, opera, music, literature, and visual art, the lively festival holds panels, performances, and discussions of these art forms. Another one of the city’s most significant arts and culture festivals is the Adelaide Fringe. For about 24 days in early spring, local and worldwide artists convene in the city to perform shows. The type of media ranges from film to puppetry to circus theatre to comedy. Hundreds of events are then held in pop-up venues such as warehouses, hotels, parks, and art galleries throughout Adelaide. During the holiday season, the city hosts the Adelaide Christmas Pageant, a large parade that takes place at the city center. Other attractions in the capital city include the National Wine Centre, Adelaide Botanic Garden, Adelaide Park Lands, and Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
