Central Coast Information

About the Central Coast

About an hour north outside of Sydney, on the coast of the Tasman Sea, sits the region known as the Central Coast. Located within New South Wales, it consists several towns, the largest of which is Gosford. Originally founded and inhabited for thousands of years by aboriginal groups, the Central Coast of Australia was later colonized by British settlers after diseases they introduced took out much of the original indigenous population. The influence of both cultures still exists strongly throughout the area.

Things to Do in the Central Coast

The Australian Reptile Park is popular tourist attraction in Gosford, as well as the Gosford Classic Car Museum. Kids and adults alike can enjoy themselves at several laser tag locations. Hike in the Mt. Penang Parklands or bounce from tree to tree at the Tree Tops Adventure Park. Flex your eagle eyes on a whale watching trip, or if that’s not active enough for your tastes, cast your line and dangle your bait to entrap some salmon, whiting, or bream. Try your hand at water sports with Aquafun at Avoca Beach. Beer and wine tastings abound. If you’re looking for a little retail therapy, Erina Fair will certainly sport anything you need.

Day Trips from the Central Coast

Newcastle is 60 minutes away and Sydney is anywhere between 60 to 90 minutes away, depending on traffic. Both are major Australian cities and will have lots of activities and dining options for individual travelers or families. Come of the biggest attractions in Sydney include the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbor Bridge, and Coogie, Bondi, and Manly beaches. There is a very active foodie culture in Sydney, so restaurant and cafes are innumerable. Some top sights in Newcastle are the Newcastle Memorial Walk, Nobby’s Head and Break wall, Miss Porter’s House, and The Lock Up.

Central Coast Accommodations

There are several different cities in the Central Coast, so it really depends one where you’re staying. The largest city, Gosford, offers a variety of different lodging options. Hotel Gosford is near Erina Street and is probably the best option if shopping at Erina Fair mall complex is of interest on your trip to the Central Coast. The Galaxy Motel, the Gosford Motor Inn, and Gosford Palms Motor Inn all have high ratings as well. Of course, Tripping.com offers rentals that will serve all your needs.

Transportation in the Central Coast

Driving is probably the simplest way to get around the Central Coast, and the Sydney Newcastle Freeway and the Central Coast Highway are the main thoroughfares by which to do so. However, shuttles leave Sydney Airport airport every 30 mins and busses operate throughout the city. If traveling by train, the Gosford stop serves the Central Coast and can be reached by trains from the Sydney or Newcastle stops, which leave every 30 minutes as well. Lastly, Palm Beach Ferries operate between Palm Beach and Ettalong Beach, which is a good option if you’re traveling in-country.
