misterbnb is an online community that provides gay-friendly short term accommodations in the form of homestays in more than 130 countries. The company is based in Paris, France, and is not only a way for arranging travel accommodations but is a social platform where gay men can interact and share travel experiences. Their motto is “travel and live like a local”.

misterbnb’s History

The company was founded by Matthieu Jost, in 2011, when he and his partner shared an apartment in Barcelona, Spain and upon arrival discovered that the host was uncomfortable with gay men staying in her home. That experience implored him to foster an environment for and by gay men to have safe, positive and comfortable accommodations and travel experiences.

How to Use misterbnb

In the top right hand corner of the home page, users can sign up for the site and become part of the international gay travel community. Browse listings by inputting your desired travel destination and dates into the search bar. View photos, amenities, reviews and details about each listing and host on the listing page. Users are able to search with filters based upon what type of accommodation they would like, as well as search top travel destinations.

Upon arriving to the search results page, users can customize their search further.

"We are a gay couple from Brussels for the first time in NY and we spent 5 amazing days in this apartment. The location in Hell’s Kitchen was spotless, at walking distance from Times Square and in the proximity of the Broadway theaters, Central Park and the Rockefeller Center. Also we were in one of the most prominent gay areas of the city, with plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants of any kind and sort. The apartment was charming, with lots of space for our luggage and with the possibility to use a wide range of facilities, including the kitchen, the backyard garden, Internet and TV. Jordan is the perfect lodger: very considerate, friendly, fun and social. We felt at home from the very beginning and we really had the impression to stay at a friend’s place rather than simply renting out a room. Jordan was also very helpful in many occasions and gave us some great advices on places to visit, transports and entertainments.
