Spend your days with family enjoying lake activities such as jet skiing and tubing, and then explore local caves and museums for a change of pace.
1. Boating
You can’t have a lake vacation without taking the family out for a day of boating. Launch your own boat at one of the boat ramps, or rent a boat from a local outfit. Don’t forget to pack the sunscreen, and make sure that everyone has a life jacket on.
2. Hiking
Gather the family together, put on some good shoes, and visit Indian Lake State Park or Cherokee Trail for an afternoon of hiking. While making your way through the woods, slow down to enjoy the more peaceful pace of life and the fresh air. Don’t forget to pack a couple of water bottles and a good topographical map.
3. Jet Skiing
The daredevils in your group can spend a day out on the water zooming around on jet skis. Bring your own, or rent them from a local outfit. Young children need to watch from the shore, but older children can ride with an adult. Remember safety first, and deck everyone out with life jackets.
4. Bird and Wildlife Watching
From the deck of your vacation rental, pull out the binoculars to indulge in a little bird and wildlife watching. Carry a notebook with you to document any birds or animals you see while out on the lake or spending time at Indian Lake State Park. Get the entire family involved by giving everyone a notebook and comparing notes at the end of the trip.
5. Tubing
Enjoy some thrills when you take a boat out on to Indian Lake by attaching a tube to the boat. Each family member can take a turn skimming along the water behind the boat. Make sure that younger children ride with a parent or older sibling.
6. Skiing
If you visit the lake in the winter months, take a drive over to Mad River Mountain for a day of skiing or snowboarding. This ski resort offers 23 trails with varying skill levels and two dedicated areas for newbies. There is also a dedicated area for tubing.
7. Swimming
Pack up the car, and head over to one of the swimming areas for a day of splashing in the water. Old Field Beach and Fox Island Beach offer areas for families to spend a day getting all wet. Both of these areas are open to the public.
8. Armstrong Air and Space Museum
Load the family into the car for a brief drive to Wapakoneta where Neil Armstrong grew up. Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. While visiting the town, take some time out to visit the Armstrong Air and Space Museum. At this museum, your family can learn more about the role Ohio played in the space race.
9. Ohio Caverns
Take the family underground in West Liberty, Ohio. This cave system is the largest one in the state with up to 90 percent of the stalactites and stalagmites still active. This popular tourist destination gives your family the chance to take a turn as explorers.
10. The Logan County Historical Society and Museum
Take the family to enjoy a little history of a bygone era at this historical society and museum. Once the home of the Orr family, the Orr Mansion now sits next to a historical museum that explores the history of the county. After visiting the home and museum, walk over to the Logan County Transportation Museum.
