When it comes to romantic vacations, particularly for those who like a beach-and-sun-soaked backdrop, an island getaway is the way to go. The only problem is deciding which island you and your love want to visit.

It’s mainly a win-win proposition. Just about any island you choose can be the setting of a romantic getaway to remember. Here are six to consider for your next couple’s escape.

1. Palawan

The current political and social climate in the Philippines leaves plenty to be desired, but don’t let that scare you away from Palawan. In fact, it was recently named the world’s best island destination by Travel + Leisure.

Like most destinations on this list, there are plenty of opportunities to simply relax on Palawan. There are also many other couple-friendly activities to take part in including hiking, backpacking, snorkeling, and boodle fights – a Filipino feast spread out across a vast array of banana leaves.

2. Kauai

The Hawaiian Islands are rich in romantic locations for couples, but many will tell you it’s hard to beat Kauai. In addition to the sometimes-overwhelming natural scenery, couples can take part in mountain tubing, snorkeling, surfing, whale watching, or even fishing.

There are also plenty of areas for long walks and hiking, such as Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park. You also might consider taking a sailboat ride along the Napali Coast, which offers breathtaking views of the island’s lush and towering mountains.

3. Santorini

The Greek Islands are known for their beauty, and they don’t come much lovelier than Santorini.

One area to consider is Akrotiri, which rests on the southern part of the island and offers a great view of a volcano and Santorini’s West Coast. The area is known for friendly locals, as well as hotels that are more affordable than some other parts of the island.

Some couples prefer to take a cruise of the Greek Islands, but if you’re more comfortable in one location during the entirety of your getaway, Santorini is a guaranteed winner.

4. Bora Bora

Each island on this list offers its own form of beauty, but many will argue it’s hard to beat the crystal clear blue waters of Bora Bora.

The island has much more to offer than the serene waters, however. You can hike to the top of Mt. Otemanu, or take a guided 4×4 tour for those who would rather avoid what can be a somewhat challenging walk up 2,400 feet.

The island also boasts an abundance of romantic gourmet dinner spots. Or you could have breakfast delivered by canoe when staying in one of the island’s famous overwater bungalows.

5. Virgin Gorda

Part of the British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda gives you a chance at plenty of alone time, even on the beach. You might consider spending a day at Pond Bay Beach, a mostly pristine beach that doesn’t offer easy access to the general public.

Another sight to see on Virgin Gorda is Spring Bay, which features clear waters perfect for swimming or snorkeling. You can also visit Spring Bay National Park, which has many areas to picnic within view of the giant boulders that line the beach.

6. St. Barths

The Caribbean is chock full of romantic options, but St. Barths is often considered on of the most luxurious and picturesque.

One of the island’s unique features is Shell Beach, a beach made up of millions of shells instead of sand. It’s a great place to relax for a day, and be sure to take in the beautiful view of the sunset at nightfall.

There are also many romantic villas available to rent on the island, with excellent views of the sea, private mini pools, and plenty of privacy. Further, treat yourself to a treatment for two at Le Guanahani, a beachside spa amid tropical gardens.
