Top Destinations for Summer Travel: St Petersburg
Many of us associate round-the-clock daylight with summer in Scandinavia. But in St Petersburg you can also experience the long magical hours of summer.
From late May to mid-July travelers to St Petersburg can experience the "White Nights." Nevsky Prospekt, the city's main street, lights up with shades of pink, peach and pale blue long after midnight.
Summer Events
To celebrate the long daylight hours, St Petersburg hosts a number of spectacular events. The Stars of the White Nights 2013 Festival (May 24th - July 28th), for example, features hundreds of ballet, opera and classical music performances by the world-class artists. The Scarlet Sails event is another one that is not to be missed. In fact, it is one of the largest annual public gatherings in Russia. The magical night features musical and theatrical performances, an epic water and light show including a mock pirate battle on the Riva Neva, and a fireworks display like no other. In 2013, you can join the Scarlet Sails celebration on June 22nd, at 11:00 p.m. at The Palace Square.
