Top 5 Things to do in Puerto Peñasco

The following is a sponsored post from the local experts at, who share their tips on their favorite things to do in Puerto Peñasco.

Puerto Peñasco also known as "Rocky Point" by international travelers, is a little beach town in the north of Mexico, just a few miles from the border with the state of Arizona in the United States.

Located in the state of Sonora, Rocky Point is a beautiful town along the coast of the Sea of Cortes (aka Gulf of California).

Cool Fun Fact: the Sea of Cortés was named by Jacques Cousteau the "world's aquarium."

Now we are going to show you the top 5 things to do (apart of from scuba diving) in Rocky Point.

Relax at the Beach

Maybe this is a given but this should be the first thing you do on a vacation. that's the whole point in the first place - to rest and not be more tired when you return to your normal life. We can assure you this would not be a problem in Rocky Point in any vacation rental, resort or hotel you choose. You have the opportunity to sit beach front with a margarita in your hand and the white sand between your toes and just relax.

Eat Great Food

One of the first things you should do when you arrive to Rocky Point is to eat some fresh sea food. It doesn't get any fresher than this. You can go to the “Malecon" and enjoy seafood in one of the many restaurants above or near the Fish Market, where you can get the best fish in town. Maybe you can say, “I don't like fish." We would say, "Have you tried fresh sea food straight from the fisherman's hands instead of a frozen fish stick that traveled thousand of miles to get to you?" Try it and then you let us know what you think.

Enjoy a Sunset Cruise

There are several sunset cruises in Puerto Peñasco, from the Pirate Party cruise to the most luxurious and elegant ones. It does not matter which one you choose, we promise that you are going to experience one of the most amazing sunsets you have ever seen. for some reason there's a phenomenon on the Pacific side of the Northern Hemisphere that makes the most colorful sunsets we've ever seen. The majestic form of the sun submerging in the water makes the sunsets among the very best in the world, comparable only with the ones in Hawaii.

Visit Bird's Island

If you are like Jacques Cousteau and your thing is the marine life, you have to visit Bird's Island, also known as “Isla San Jorge." Here you can visit a colony of hundreds of sea lions and birds like seagulls, herons and pelicans living together. There are several cruise ships that can take you to the island. You can even pay for a private trip in a yacht. Or if you are on a budget, you can try visiting in a “Panga" (Mexican name for a small boat).

A hike at “El Pinacate"

El Pinacate is probably the most important place to visit in Rocky Point. Maybe it's not as a popular or as fun as the beach during spring break or wild rides in ATVs by the coastline, but El Pinacate is a national park recognized worldwide for its unique wildlife and plants which only reside in this corner of the world. El Pinacate was also an active volcano a couple of thousand years ago, and you can still take walks through the petrified lava roads. El Pinacate has tons of history too. NASA brought astronauts here to do experiments and trials before going to the moon. So on your next trip to Puerto Peñasco don't forget to visit the biosphere reserve of El Pinacate and “El Elegante," the biggest crater of them all.

So there you have it, top 5 things to do in Rocky Point. Which one's at the top of your list?
