Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey : a Must-See for First-Time Visitors
Built in 1870, Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey is an historic landmark and a must-see for first time visitors. While it was originally a hub for shipping, for decades the wharf has been mainly an attraction for travelers and locals looking to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
Accessible almost exclusively to pedestrians, the wharf is lined with restaurants and shops.
Most of the restaurants and cafes have lovely views and many offer outdoor seating.
In addition to souvenirs such as keychains and mugs, you can find popular local sweets, such as salt water taffy.
Crowds of visitors throng the walk down the wharf, though at the end of the wharf there is a nice open space that offers a bit more breathing room.
Tickets for whale watching tours can also be purchased at the wharf's end.
Just past the whale watching tour booths, at the far end of the wharf, you'll find an observation deck atop the Rappa's Harbor View restaurant.
Take the stairs up to the observation deck and you'll be treated to views of the harbor and the bay beyond.
Frequently you will see kayaks, and if you're lucky some wildlife including seals and sea otters. Walk 'round the other side and enjoy views of the shoreline.
On your way out, pop by one of the sweet shops and pick up some lovely treats for the road.
Take one last glance back as you leave - you know you'll be back.
