Situated in the country’s northeastern region is the scenic state of Vermont. The state’s capital is the city of Montpelier. Nicknamed “The Green Mountain State,” Vermont is one of the least populous states in the nation. The landmark pays homage to the American Revolutionary War and marks the site of the Battle of Bennington. Another prominent town is Manchester. This town offers superb shopping centers with its many factory outlets. The Northshire Bookstore, a prominent independent bookstore, is nestled in Manchester as well.
The most renowned lake in the state is Lake Champlain, a freshwater lake straddling the border between the U.S. and Canada. The largest Vermont city at Lake Champlain is Burlington. The lake has a number of islands which include South Hero Island and Isle La Motte. Along Lake Champlain are a few state parks like Sand Bar State Park in Milton and Button Bay State Park in Ferrisburgh. Another noteworthy freshwater lake is Lake Bomoseen. Nearby the western coast of Lake Bomoseen is the Bomoseen State Park situated in the Taconic Mountains.
The only national park in the state recognized by the U.S. National Park System is the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. In addition to featuring picturesque scenery of hillsides and forests, the park has a working farm and heritage museum. A section of the over 2,000-mile-long Appalachian Trail also runs through the state.
