Montreat is a small town in Buncombe County, North Carolina of a little over 700 people. If you want to get away the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Montreat is the perfect choice. With a total area of 2.7 square miles, you'll get that quaint, small town feel for a true retreat. What are you waiting for?
Montreat, incorporated as North Carolina township in 1967, is a relatively new town although it began in 1897 when The Reverend John C. Collins, a congregational minister from Connecticut purchased 4,500 acres with the goal of building a Christian settlement. The name "Montreat" comes from a combination of the words "mountain" and "retreat," and it's easy to see why. Montreat is nestled just north of Black Mountain and in the shadow of Mount Mitchell, and it's the perfect place for people to come for a spiritual and physical renewal. Now, Montreat is still the perfect place for a renewal, religious or not.
The Montreat Conference Center is surrounded by approximately 2,500 acres of pristine wilderness that is permanently protected and can never be developed, making it the perfect place to take a hike. During the summer months, you can join the public hikes that take place mostly on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Let by a summer wilderness ranger staff member, it's the perfect way to connect with others and learn about the area. You can also choose to hike on your own or take a guided hike year-round. Some groups head to the mountaintop for morning vespers, meditation, or sunset. Get the most of your small town vacation by attending a Friday Night Barn Dance, held every Friday night during the summer. Admission is free and all are welcome. See why it's Montreat's favorite family tradition!
Nearby Mount Mitchell's dramatic summit is the highest point east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet and is not to be missed during your stay here. The observation deck is easily accessible and provides outstanding views of Mount Mitchell State Park's spruce-fir forest. You can also learn all about the mountain's cultural and natural history at the museum and join short hikes near the summit and challenging treks leading to adjacent wilderness areas. If you want to spend more than just a day, there's a nine-site tent campground open during the warm weather months and a full-service restaurant serving visitors from May to October. Also nearby is the Pisgah National Forest full of mile-high peaks, cascading waterfalls, and heavily forested slopes. This primarily hardwood forest is comprised of over 500,000 acres of whitewater rivers, waterfalls and hundreds of miles of trails. The opportunities for mountain exploration are limitless during your mountain retreat in Montreat!
Located at the heart of Montreat Conference Center overlooking Lake Susan, is the historic Assembly Inn. It has 100 guest rooms and can accommodate groups of up to 200 guests in its single and double occupancy rooms. There are also ten guest lodges, including the Winsborough Inn, are scattered among the private residences in the Montreat community and are all within minutes of Lake Susan. For a more rustic visit, the Montreat Family Campground is located alongside Graybeard Stream and consists of 28 tent and small pop-up camper sites, each with a picnic table, fire pit and grill.
