Black Lake Information

About Black Lake

If you’re looking for a relaxing, peaceful summer vacation destination, Black Lake in upstate New York’s St. Lawrence County is the place for you. Located just a few miles from the Canadian border and St. Lawrence River, Black Lake offers some of the best fishing spots around, especially if you’re looking for bass. Make sure to bring your passport so you can hop over the border and experience the best that Canada has to offer in Brockville and nearby Canadian towns. A vacation to Black Lake means wine tasting just off the water, a trip to a history museum, and, of course, some fun in the sun. Start planning your trip now and get ready for a whole lot of relaxing.

Things to do in Black Lake

Fishing is the top attraction at Black Lake. The lake is chock full of large and Smallmouth Bass, walleye, Black Crappie, bluegill, Yellow Perch, Northern Pike, Rock Bass, muskellunge, bullhead, catfish, and much more. You’ll be hard-pressed to fish in Black Lake and not catch anything. Your best bet for catching bass is near the islands and bays in the lake, due to the slightly warmer temperatures in those areas.

Of course, if you’re heading to the lake in the summer, it probably means you’re ready to soak up some sun. Bring your own boat and use the free, state-maintained boat launch or the many other public and private launches around the perimeter of the lake. Black Lake encompasses nearly 11,000 acres and features small, rocky islands, sandbars, and the Indian River which flows into it. Hop in your boat and cruise along the water to take in all the natural beauty in this gorgeous region.

If you really want to relax on your vacation, what better way to do that than go wine tasting? Belle-Brooke Vineyard’s tasting room is located in a renovated 1800s barn and features a covered deck. Their collection of semi-dry and sweet white and red wines will be a nice refresher after a long day out on the water or in the sun. Catch live music at the vineyard every Wednesday night from June to August and their annual holiday “Wine & Design” class in November. The winery is located just off the northwest shore of Black Lake; make a trip there and you won’t regret it!

The Hammond Museum is just a few miles south of Black Lake in the town of Hammond. Although small, it features many artifacts unique to the rural farming area surrounding Black Lake. Check out the mid 19-century replica stone house and barn to get a feel for what this area used to look like. If it’s a rainy day and the kids are itching to do something, head to the museum and give them a history lesson!

Day Trips from Black Lake

Keep that passport handy because Brockville, formerly Elizabethtown, is just across the border. St. Lawrence Park is a great beach to go relax and picnic with the family, and it’s located right along the St. Lawrence River. Brockville Country Club features public golfing, curling on the ice, and overall stunning grounds. The Aquatarium is a fun place for young kids to explore the wonders of an aquarium. The Fulford Place offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the luxurious lifestyle of former Senator George T. Fulford. This 20,000-square foot mansion was originally constructed in the late 1800s and the grounds were designed by the renowned Frederick Olmsted. Walk through the hall, see the original tapestries, paintings, and artwork collected by Fulford and take in the enormity of this house.
