The island of Santorini, officially known as Thira, is a beautiful place to stay when vacationing in Greece. This island is very exciting—from romantic views to active volcanoes. No matter what adventure you choose to go on here, the smaller island of Thira will provide you with a good time.
Things to do in Thira
There is plenty of fun to be had in Thira. Since it’s an island, there are beaches everywhere for you to check out: including Kamari Beach, Red Beach, and the Amoudi Bay, which provides great views of the ocean. For more tourist-like adventures, the Museum of Prehistoric Thira will show you the ruins of Santorini, and the Thira Maritime Museum will give you information on all things marine-life in the area. At night, you can head over to Enigma Club with some friends and dance the night away, or spend the evening at Anemos and enjoy the sunset while you sip on a nice cocktail or glass of wine. If you’ve got money to blow, Thira offers yachts for rent, so you can spend your day on the deck of a boat enjoy the sun. As a romantic destination, bring your partner along and check out the amazing view of the Caldera, or end your day with a nice walk along the beach as the sun goes down.
Thira Day Trips
Being an island, there aren’t many day trips you can take from Thira. But the few that there are super fun and not too far away. There are ferries (specifically the Flying Cat 4) that run from Santorini to Ios, an island just about 4 hours away from Thira that is filled with beautiful cliffs and buildings perfect for pictures. A much closer trip would be to Oia, also known as “The Place On Top of the World”, and features a lot of traditional Greek cave houses for you to check out. For a good look at the volcanic history on the island, travel 15 minutes south to Akrotiri, a village on Santorini that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1627 BC, but preserved many art pieces and other works. For a nice beach day on the other side of the island, head out 15 minutes to Kamari, a southeastern village that lies on the coast of Santorini, and is the perfect place to go for a beach day away from the hotel or apartment.
