If you are looking for a sunny place to relax on the beach, then Wasa Lake is the place for you. This family vacation spot has been around since the 1950s. It has the warmest swimming lake in the Kootenays and the Wasa Lake Park also offers camping, swimming, hiking, cycling, boating and nature viewing. The park actually protects a grassland ecosystem which includes a portion of North America's most northern ponderosa pine forest which provides a huge habitat for a wide variety of animals and plants. Your family won't want to leave!
The Wasa Lake Provincial Park was established in 1955 to provide recreational access to the warmest swimming lake in the Kootenays. Back in the early 1900s, the Wasa area was originally logged by the railway and irrigated for years. Cattle ranching later became the agricultural mainstay, and now Wasa Village welcomes tourists with facilities and services.
Wasa Lake is great for canoeing, bicycling, fishing, hiking, swimming, and other water sports. There is an 8 km paved path called "Wasa Lions Way" and a secondary trail circling the lake for both cyclists and pedestrians. For a more scenic route, try the self guided mountain bike loop that takes you from Wasa Lake to Lazy Lake or the "Lazy Lake Bike Loop," a 33 km trail that takes you up Wolf Creek Road to Lazy Lake and back to Wasa Lake on Lazy Lake Road. Just don't forget your mountain bike! There is also a children's bike park at the campground. No bike? No problem! "Forest of the Rainshadow Self-guided Interpretive Trail" is a 2.7 km loop, 1 hour, nature walk for the whole family starting at the amphitheatre located in the campground.
