Close to so much, Casa Mirasol is an oasis with all modern amenities Sierra Madre Mountains surround SanMiguel de Allende, whose cobblestone streets and brightly colored houses date back to the sixteenth century. After settling into Casa Mirasol, you will want to go foraging for food. A mere kilometer walk of fifteen minutes will take you to Mercado IgnacioRamirez - your meca for fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs and other items depending on the vendor. Bring home some papaya and mango to drown in lime for breakfast, some little ripe bananas and milk for a licuado, a Mexican smoothie, and if you wish to adventure into some Latin American fruits try a licuado with guanabana, mamey or cherimoya. Casa Mirasol has a well-equiped kitchen with knives to cut up the fruit and a blender to whirl it all together. But then, the real treat is to take it all up to the rooftop. Get the cushions out for the swing, slowly sip your fruit drink, enjoy the birds, the view of the surrounding hills and the beautiful sunset. The town comes alive in the evening when you can simply step outside the gates to hail a taxi that will take you anywhere in town for forty pesos (and I like to tip it up to fifty pesos – muchas gracias). But how to decide where to go? Use internet, of course, and go to TripAdvisor where you will find many reviews for restaurants. Casa Mirasol has WiFi in all rooms and each bedroom has a computer monitor with HDMI cables to connect your own device. You can even watch Netflix when you get home. Tomorrow is another day. Just across the street, over the bridge and immediately right is the Fabrica la Aurora, which still retains the old factory equipment within its new Art Gallery identity. Today it houses extensive art gallery and workshop space for many artists. After your eyes and brain are saturated with form and color, you can get a bit to eat and a coffee here as well. On the other hand, if you turn right after leaving the gates you will find yourself visiting many craft shops, each one a bit different from the last. Lest I forget your need for fresh water - at the gate house, there is a stack of heavy water bottles. There is a full water bottle in the kitchen, but when you run out, just ask whoever is at the gate to bring one to you at K-5 (Kah cinco, por favor). Same as the taxi – 40 pesos and 10 pesos for the heavy lifting – muchas gracias ☺. While I know you could stay busy just exploring all the stone doorways, ancient spring fed washing troughs at the Plaza del Chorro, and so many interesting shops in San Miguel, don’t forget there are towns nearby, such as Atotonilco that are easily accessible by taxi or a bus. Casa Mirasol is in a convenient location for those of you who wish to stay longer and participate in the many learning experiences of San Miguel. For example, you can take art lessons at the Cristi Fer Art Gallery and Workshops, 1. 2 km from Casa Mirasol, or work on your Spanish language skills at one of the three Spanish language schools. And I would be remiss if I did not mention that there are many venues for learning Mexican cooking. I think you are beginning to appreciate just how much there is to do in San Miguel and how comfortable you will be with Casa Mirasol as your home in San Miguel. Casa Mirasol is on the top floor of the three story building K. While you can walk up the stairs there is also an elevator. Lavender greets you outside the main door. As you enter into a short hallway, there is a guest bath on the left and a laundry room with washer/dryer on the right. A full kitchen awaits you with granite counter tops, a large side by side refrigerator/freezer, full size gas range and oven, dishwasher, dishes, flatware and a variety of small appliances, pots and pans and cooking utensils. There is a center island for additional food preparation and storage cabinets. Off to one side there is a coffee/tea nook with a microwave, coffee maker, glasses and cups. On either side of the kitchen are the doorways leading to the two spacious bedrooms. One is a bit larger and includes a sofa/single bed as well as the queen size bed. Within this bedroom, there is a short corridor leading straight to an independent entry door, a bathroom to the left with bathtub/shower and a closet to the right. There is also a linen closet next to the bathroom with lots of towels, bedding and large towels for use at the swimming pool. This bedroom has a total of four closets, within which you will find plenty of storage for your belongings as well as items for your general comfort. The weather is remarkably consistent but ocasionally there are colder nights in the winter so we have space heaters and should it get sultry in May there is a large fan. Personally, spending the warm afternoons in the pool seems preferable and the nights are always cool. Within one of the closets opposite the bed there is a computer monitor and HDMI cable to attach your own device and connect to the internet. The other bedroom has a queen size bed, two closets- one with a computer monitor- and an adjacent bathroom with a flat entry shower and grab bars. There is a sliding glass door leading to a small balcony. A desk sits in a window alcove looking out into the local pine trees that attract humming birds, fly catchers and other birds. You can also watch the cranes flying low along the Obraje River, which is often dry but surges with water if rain falls in the surrounding mountains. The main living area encompasses the dining room with its glass top table and seating for six on comfortably padded chairs and the living room. There is a comfortable sofa and chair with lamps for reading. There is also a TV. The sliding glass door opens to a small balcony with a table and chairs for a morning cup of tea/coffee and a greeting to the vermilion fly catcher who flits about on his black wings catching breakfast. Not all of the objets in the condo come from Mexico. The black metal kiwi hails from New Zealand. The living room has a fireplace, a TV, a comfortable sofa and chair with cushions. The sliding glass door opens to a balcony with a table and chairs. In the middle of the condo complex there is a swimming pool and a perfect building for a wedding with a white marble floor, stunning dining tables, water features, many sofas and chairs, a library alcove, and other rooms with a whirlpool tub and even some exercise equipment. Usually it is quiet and a nice place to read when Alicia comes on Monday to clean the condo!
