Information about Chelem

About Chelem

A small, traditional fishing village situated on the northern Yucatan peninsula. Chelem has a population of just 4,000. That means there will be plenty of space to stretch out and lounge on the beach, head to the nearby ruins, or shop in the town center without having to worry too much about other tourists. If you’re looking for a place to simply enjoy the sunshine, the gentle Gulf waters, and family-owned restaurants and shops, start planning your trip to Chelem now!

Things to do in Chelem

One of the best parts about Chelem is its small population. You’ll be able to wander around and not bump into crowd of people doing the same thing. Head to the town square and check out some of the locally-owned restaurants. TacoMaya, Restaurante Costa Azul, and La Playa are a couple of places serving up great cocktails and traditional Mexican food. While you’re out and about, head to the beach, Chelem Puerto, and bring a chair or beach towel so you can bask in the sunshine. You’ll see many of the local fishing boats docked, pelicans resting on wooden stumps in the water, and maybe even Chelem residents taking a moment to enjoy the view, too. There’s plenty of space to stretch out or set up a hammock and read a good book, so head to the beach and enjoy a relaxing day by the water.

Day Trips from Chelem

For an excellent day trip, head to the Uxmal Ruins. They’re certainly a sight to see, as they’ve been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are usually much less crowded than other ruins in Mexico. This site has an incredible balance of jungle, open spaces, and impressive Mayan ruins. At its peak, the ruins are believed to have had a population of roughly 20,000 people and the site covers over 150 acres. While you’re there, check out the Pyramid of the Magician, a 117-foot tall structure that was built on five superimposed temples, a unique design found in very few Mayan pyramids. Also be sure to visit the Nunnery Quadrangle, the Palace of the Governor, and the Temple of the Doves. Spend the day at these ancient ruins before heading back to your accommodations in Chelem.

Just a short drive from Chelem, Progreso is a major stop for Mexican cruises. Although it’s much more crowded than Chelem, Progreso boasts many stores, shops, and attractions that Chelem does not. You can find local merchants selling replicas of Mayan artifacts, farmer’s markets offering tropical fruits, and beachfront dining. Spend a night out in this city and check out Mr. Sol Bar, located right on the water, or Eladio’s Bar Progreso where you can enjoy a cocktail on the shore and gaze out at the Gulf waters. Don’t pass up the opportunity to visit Progreso while you’re in Chelem.

Transportation in Chelem

Getting to Chelem from out of the country is fairly simple; just fly into Mérida International Airport, also known as Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport. From the airport, your best bet would be to hire a taxi to take you to your accommodations in Chelem since there is no direct public transportation route between the two. If possible, pre-arrange a taxi to take you, as prices will be cheaper. While in Chelem, you can get most places in town by walking. To reach Progreso or the ruins, consider the colectivos, a shuttle service that takes locals and visitors alike to nearby towns.
