Keene Information

About Keene

Situated in the Adirondack Park, Keene is a small town that’s home to the highest mountain in New York. The Adirondack Park is a state park comprised of more than 2.5 million public acres of Forest Preserve and another 3.4 million acres of privately owned land, towns, and villages. Keene houses two sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a handful of other significant historic attractions. The town is big on ecotourism, so if you visit, make sure you are ready for the great outdoors. You might even see some wildlife on your trip!

Things to do in Keene

At an elevation of 5,343 feet, Mount Marcy is New York’s highest peak. Fortunately for visitors to Keene, the mountain is also within the town’s limits. Head to the Van Hoevenberg Trail which starts at the Adirondack Lo, a historic lodge which sits on a protected area of over 700 acres near Heart Lake. From the trailhead to the summit of Mt. Marcy it’s a 7.4-mile hike, so remember to bring plenty of water and some snacks for your trek. It’s documented that Theodore Roosevelt, after learning that President William McKinley, who had recently been shot and was getting worse, hiked ten miles down the southwest face of the mountain to board the nearest train to return to Washington. On his way, he learned that McKinley had died, and so Roosevelt boarded the train to Buffalo to get sworn in as president. You can even hike the Roosevelt-Marcy Trail, named after him and his journey that day, on your mountain trek!

Mountain bikers will love exploring all the trails Keene Valley has to offer. Try the extensive Van Hovenberg Mountain Biking Trail System. The Whiteface Mountain Bike Park is just a few miles from Keene and its 27 diverse downhill mountain biking trails are worth the visit. The Flume Trail System, located just 20 minutes away in Wilmington, boasts 8 miles of hiking, biking, and other recreational activities. The system is the first on forest preserve lands in the Adirondacks to allow mountain biking. It was designed to meet the specifications of the International Mountain Bicycling Association, and has trails rated as easy, moderate, and hard. If you love mountain biking, you have to check it out!

Don’t forget to bring a few treasures home with you from your vacation. Stop in at Dartbrook Rustic Goods and pick up an antique canoe paddle, a sign from the Lake Placid Winter Olympics, or an Adirondack style chair for your home. You’ll find everything from deer antlers mounted on a plaque to old street signs, so if you’re an antique junkie, this place is for you. The Adirondack Attic has a similar vibe, with the added bonus of vintage clothing. Customers love the women’s section and the two rooms devoted to furniture and collectibles. When you’ve worked up an appetite searching through all the collectibles, head over to ADK Café where you can cozy up next to the fireplace and enjoy their chicken pot pie or lasagna, or sit outdoors on their front patio and sip on a handcrafted maple margarita. They also serve pies to go, so you can take it with you when you’re too full for dessert.
