Things to do at Mammoth Cave

There are plenty of fun outdoor activities you can participate in at Mammoth Cave. If you’re interested in learning more about the caves themselves, or want to learn about what lies beneath Mammoth Cave Park, take a ranger-led tour of the park and learn all about the history of Mammoth Cave. Feeling adventurous? Hike through the park on one of the many different hiking trails for some one-on-one time with nature. If you’re drawn to the water, grab your fishing pole and head out to Green River to catch some bluegill or bass; or bring a kayak or canoe and paddle your way along the Nolin River. Don’t feel like walking? Saddle up for a nice horseback ride north of the Green River, or bring your bike along and ride through the park while taking in the nature around you. This winter, the park hosts an event called Cave Sing, where you can explore the park while also enjoying wonderful music throughout the caves.

Mammoth Cave Day Trips

While there are tons of fun things to do in Mammoth Cave, there are also a variety of different day trips you can take from the park. Louisville, the largest city in Kentucky, and is home to the Kentucky Derby and the Louisville Slugger Museum. For a little history lesson, travel an hour southwest to Bowling Green and visit the National Corvette Museum, or the Historic Railpark and Train Museum. Bowling Green is also a great place to go if you’re in the mood to shop, with the Greenwood Mall being a little over an hour away from the park. Looking to get out on the water? Green River Lake State Park is an hour and a half away, and offers a variety of fun activities on the water ranging from fishing to kayaking.

Mammoth Cave Accommodations

Although Mammoth Cave is a national park, there are many places you can stay both inside and outside of the park. Transportation in Mammoth Cave

Since Mammoth Cave is a national park, your best bet would be to drive around. Inside the park, there is ferry service to take you to the Green river if you’re looking to spend some time out on the water. There are also guided boat tours throughout the caves, however if you want to have some free time around the area, we recommend renting a car at places like Enterprise or Avis, both 20 minutes away from the park. You can also bring your bike along and tour the park through the vast amount of bike trails in the area!
