A mix between a theme park, an amusement park, and a water park, Indiana Beach is a hidden gem in the Midwest. The early beginnings of Indiana Beach started when a dam was built near in the early 1900s and Lake Shafer was created. The Spackman family, led by Earl Spackman, took his family to visit the lake and, in 1926, he and others helped to create and open Ideal Beach on the shores of the lake. Speckman added new rides and activities in the 1930s and 40s, and when he passed on, his son took over the project and changed the name to Indiana Beach. Now, Indiana Beach has grown from a swimming area to the largest amusement and resort vacations playground in Indiana.
The beach is surrounded by Lake Shafer, Tippecanoe River, and Honey Creek. A short ten-minute drive from Monticello, Indiana Beach offers visitors a fun filled visit starting on opening day which is usually at the end of May.
The beach is home two three wooden roller coasters, including the Cornball Express which was voted the #1 Wooden Rollercoaster in the World by ThemeParkCritic.com in 2002. It boasts three additional roller coasters, over 40 rides and games, a waterpark, and a boardwalk with shops and dining. You’d be hard-pressed to leave Indiana Beach without finding something you like.
For an easy start to a hot day, head over to the water park, grab a tube, and relax while floating down the Action River, which runs along the edge of Lake Shafer. The Splash Bash is a great spot for all ages to come and enjoy the fountains, waterfalls, and splash areas. There is also a swimming area with a beach in the heart of the water park that’s great for lounging and soaking up some rays. Once you’re feeling bold, the water park offers six different water slides and one water coaster. Throw on your swim suit and choose your adventure!
