About Cape San Blas

Sometimes referred to as Florida’s “forgotten coast”, Cape San Blas and the adjacent St. Joseph Peninsula extend out from the Florida panhandle, and are home to miles of public white sand beaches and fishing communities. From Indian Pass to the very end of Cabin Road (after it changes from Highway 30E/Cape San Blas Road, driving along all of the beaches here takes under an hour.

Things to do in Cape San Blas

Cape San Blas is delightfully idyllic and perfect for swimming, surfing and kayaking, along with every other activity that accompanies a beach location. On top of that, there are two companies that offer horseback riding on the beach, with picture-perfect photo opportunities during sunrise or sunset. Family-friendly rides do not exceed an hour and a half of riding, and kids will love this relaxing, yet fun adventure. Don’t forget about delicious seafood: the prime spot for eating oysters, crab legs, shrimp and gumbo is Indian Pass Raw Bar, while “meatier” fare like fried chicken, pizza and burgers can be found at Scallop Cove Café. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, head over to Weber’s Little Donut Shop, a local favorite that often has a long line of fans outside its stand.

On this small strip of land surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico’s sparkling waters, it’s difficult to find a rental in Cape San Blas without a decent view of the water. Most, if not all, properties are raised up in case of a hurricane and are equipped with ceiling fans (to cope with the heat). It’s common, even at an affordable rate, to find digs that have a deck or patio, plenty of parking and sunlight-drenched common areas.

Between Cape San Blas and Tallahassee, the Apalachicola National Forest is a huge swath of land that takes at least a day to explore. This huge natural preserve includes fascinating points of interest like sinkholes in the Leon Sinks Geological area (don’t try to swim in there!), Fort Gadsden (an asset during the War of 1812), the Mud Swamp Wilderness and the nature-rich Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway. A road through the forest will take you through the little towns of Sumatra and Telogia; from there, your party can loop back through farmland on Highway 71. Looking for more beaches and more food? Drive an hour into Panama City and its surrounding beaches for more delicious dining options, like Filipino fare, bagels, deli food, Mexican munchies and even sushi. For some light amusement, play some holes at Goofy Golf—which stays open till 10 p.m.!
