Things To Do in Truckee

Attractions in Truckee are dependent on the season. Truckee winters typically bring an abundance of snow. Accordingly, visitors with a penchant for winter sports such as snowboarding, skiing, and sledding should head over to the Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area, Coldstream Adventures Snowmobile Tours, or Donner Summit Sno-Park.

The weather is temperate from late spring to early autumn, so visitors can comfortably enjoy Truckee’s numerous lakes and historic sites. One of Truckee’s most notable areas is Donner Memorial State Park, a site famous for the Donner Party’s tragic expedition during the mid-1800s. Recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, Donner Memorial State Park is home to the Emigrant Trail Museum, campgrounds, hiking trails, and Donner Lake, a gorgeous freshwater lake perfect for fishing and boating.

Truckee is also in proximity to the Tahoe National Forest which features the Boca Reservoir, a lovely artificial lake, and Castle Peak, a mountain with trails suitable for biking and hiking.

History buffs will especially appreciate the well-preserved downtown area that celebrates Truckee’s humble origins as a railroad town. Lined with plenty of cozy eateries and independently-owned stores, Downtown Truckee welcomes visitors to dine, shop, and embark on walking tours.
