Auckland is one of the biggest cities in New Zealand, and is filled with fun activities for all. From hiking around an extinct volcano to discovering the nightlife in downtown, there is never a dull moment in this adventurous city.
There’s not much you can’t do in Auckland, but there are a few things that you MUST do! Get your hiking gear together and explore the natural rainforest, or even hike to the top of one of the cities 48 volcanic cones. Take your view sky high and schedule a helicopter, seaplane, or even a fighter jet ride over the city. Looking to spend time on the water? Hop on a fishing charter and catch some fish, or help sail an America’s Cup yacht. Explore hidden coves all along the shores of the beach, or plan a relaxing picnic by the ocean. Looking for some fun on land? Spend the day shopping in Newmarket, the fashion capital of New Zealand. When it’s time to eat, stop at one of Auckland’s best restaurants like Orphans Kitchen or The Sugar Club. At night, head over to the Britomart precinct and dance the night away at 1885, or hang out with friends and enjoy live music at Ortolana. Looking to get some drinks? There are a variety of wineries in the area that offer tours, or allow you to explore the vineyard at your own pace.
Although there is much to do in Auckland, there is plenty to do outside of the city as well. For a little adventure, head two hours away to the Waitomo Caves, where you can take a guided tour of the cave and all its glowworms. Looking to spend your day trip relaxing by the water? We recommend a short 40-minute drive to Bethells Beach, where you can do anything from lounging in the sand to exploring waterfalls and wildlife. An even shorter drive away is the Hauraki Gulf Islands, a great place to go if you want to swim with dolphins, or indulge in drinks on Waiheke, the ‘island of wine’. If you’re big on trying and experiencing new cuisines, an hour north is Matakana, a great city to experience great food, wine, and art. Love The Hobbit? Near Matakana is the Hobbiton movie set, where you can walk around and explore the land of the original Hobbit film.
Whether you are spending your vacation exploring the city or are planning a daytrip outside the area, we make it easy for you to find the perfect place to stay. If you love outdoor activities, we recommend choosing a rental near West Auckland, where you can do fun things like learn to surf or even go skydiving. If you plan on bringing the family along, pick a rental closer to South Auckland, near family-friendly places like Rainbow’s End Theme Park or Lock n Load Paintball. Looking for a little small town vibe? East Auckland has a lot of parks for you to relax in, as well as wineries for you to stop by and try a variety of different flavors. Planning a day trip? We recommend picking a rental near Waiheke Island, an island nearby where you can do anything from riding a horse to scheduling a massage at the Thai Lanna Massage Therapy Center. No matter where you decide to stay, you can compare rentals by reviews, ratings, price and more on Tripping. Book your Auckland rental today!
Since Auckland is so big, there are a variety of different ways to navigate around the city. For travel around the city, there are services that go through the city center (CityLink), the inner city (InnerLink), and the inner suburbs (OuterLink). Trying to get a ride home after a long night out on the town? The NightRider is the easiest way to get home on a Friday or Saturday evening. If you need bus service for a day trip, take the Kowhai Connection, a bus service that travels through Warkworth, Matakana, and Snells Beach. Another great way to get around the city on the Auckland train network. These trains run all throughout Auckland and its surrounding areas, so be sure to look up your route before you head out for the day. If you’re planning on taking a day trip to the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, the ferry will probably be your best bet, and you can purchase your tickets at any of the ferry stations in the city. Renting a car to drive around the city is definitely an option, but because the city is so big you may want to stick with public transit. There are short-term parking permits available, as well as park and ride services if you do want to use your own vehicle.
