Information about Mazatlán

About Mazatlan

Mazatlan is nestled along Mexico’s western coastline in the state of Sinaloa. The beach city was founded by Spaniards in the early mid-1500s. Later on, immigrants from several countries such as China, Germany, and Italy settled into the city which, in time, influenced Mazatlan’s culture. The city borders the Pacific Ocean and is adjacent to the southern edge of the Baja California Peninsula. As a result, the area has a tropical climate with heavy humidity during the summer season.

Norte Beach is also in proximity to downtown and features culturally significant monuments. A couple of other notable beaches include El Delfin Beach and Sábalo Beach.

The Mazatlan Aquarium has a radiant reputation throughout Latin America. The comprehensive institution offers a place for marine animals to dwell and a botanical garden replete with an aviary, frog pond, sea lions, crocodiles, and desert plant ecosystem.

Mazatlan hosts a great number of annual festivals and events. Every spring, there is the José Limón International Dance Festival as well as the Pacific International Triathlon in April. For over a century, the seaside city has celebrated the International Carnival of Mazatlan, an energetic event that begins on the Sunday prior to Mardi Gras and ends on Fat Tuesday. Attracting travelers from all over the world, the seasonal celebration involves parades, concerts, Banda Sinaloa music, and bright costumes.

Situated approximately an hour’s worth of driving northwest of Mazatlan is the town of El Quelite.
