When people think of Mexico, places like Cancun or Cabo San Lucas may come to mind. The capital of Quintana Roo, Chetumal is relatively quieter and less rowdy than other Mexican vacation destinations. For that reason and plenty more, Chetumal makes a great spot for a family vacation. Its ancient Mayan ruins, clear blue waters, and charming culture make this capital city a wonderful place to visit any time of the year.
Take in the history of Chetumal and explore the Dzibanche Ruins. Dzibanche lies just 10 minutes away from Chetumal, and was once a large Mayan city and the early capital of the Kan Dynasty. While you’re there, check out the Cormoranes Pyramid, the largest one at Dzibanche. It was built in the 5th century AD and served as the funerary pyramid of one of the kings of the Kan Dynasty. Next, make the 1.2 mile walk to the K’inich Na’, or the “House of the Sun God”, Pyramid. Two royal burials were discovered inside this pyramid, and the structure is surrounded by smaller palace-type structures so there’s plenty to explore while you’re there. Take yourself on a self-guided tour of the Oxtankah Ruins, which are just a few miles north of Chetumal. Although they are very minor in comparison to other Mayan ruins, they are still a site to see considering they were built somewhere between 200 and 600 AD!
Explore the cultural attractions in Chetumal by visiting the City Museum, The Boulevard, and the Mayan Culture Museum. First, check out the City Museum, which is located on the grounds of one of the oldest buildings in Chetumal, the Quintana Roo Cultural Institute. Here, you’ll find six galleries of historical documents, photographs, and much more. Next, head to The Boulevard, the main meeting point for locals to relax. Walk for nearly three miles along this waterfront path and stop in at restaurants, bars, and parks on the way. You’ll find evening entertainment along The Boulevard, as well, so be sure to come back at night. The Mayan Cultural Museum is a great place to learn about the Mayan civilization that survived for upwards of 2,000 years. All these places are must-visits when you vacation in Chetumal!
Laguna Bacalar is a long, narrow lake in the state of Quintana Roo. It lies just 50 minutes outside of Chetumal and is a great getaway for a day trip. The crystal blue color and incredible clarity of the water makes this a popular spot for a day outside of the city. Enjoy the tropical scenery as you lounge on the shoreline, taking in the warm air and swimming in the fresh water. Bring a picnic or head to a local food joint for some lunch. Christian’s Tacos is a popular spot, as is La Playita, a cozy cocktail bar on the waterfront. You’ll find plenty of other dining options in Bacalar itself, so take a stroll around the small town and check out what is has to offer.
