Description

Swan's Island is reached by a 17-car ferry which leaves regularly from Bass Harbor. West Lee Cottage, 18 Steamboat Hill, sits on Burnt Coat Harbor, one of the finest harbors on the coast, and resting point for the major yacht clubs. It has three bedrooms (the third is a "Studio" off the kitchen --- once a country store then an art studio --- which has three queen beds, a Franklin Stove, and workspace for art projects ). The house has wrap-around decks with views of the Harbor and is 100 yards from Kent's Wharf where lobsters can be purchased at a very reasonable price. The house is filled art, books, movies (1000 VHS, 300 DVDs) CDs, coffee and espresso makers, a bicycle, two kayaks, two TVs, plenty of deck furniture, a fire pit, free wifi, and more. There is a screen porch off the kitchen and a large pantry. It is a charming house built in 1898 with sliding glass doors to the decks, and with a rustic/California feel, a little "shabby sheek. " The Swan's Island Community is very welcoming and there are weekly activities --- Sunday breakfasts at the IOOF Hall, dances, theater, concerts, annual art crawl with open studios, and more. At the top of Steamboat Hill, a two minute walk from the House, is the Swan's Island Tea Room--- a place for amazing delights, free wifi and conversation. There are four churches on the Island, two fire stations, a consolidated school, a small grocery store, a health clinic, a public park, white sand beaches, a fresh water granite quarry for warmer swimming, a beautiful lighthouse (Hockomock Head Light), trips to neighboring Isle au Haut and Stonington for restaurants and shopping, an annual Fourth of July Pig Roast with fireworks, and numerous marked hiking trails
