"RIKYU-AN" Machiya

Come an visit, "Kiyomizu Rikyu-an, " where you and your guests will have the entire property to yourselves for the duration of your stay

----------------The Entrance----------------
"Rikyu-an" is a Kyo-machiya that is enveloped in “sugi-ita” (杉板- Japanese cedar), and features the traditional “ichimonji-kawara” roof. Simplistic at first glance, an inviting warmth awaits you as you take your first steps within the property, and welcomes you into a cozy and intimate space

Natural light filters through the latticed windows and doors to flood the entranceway with sunlight and reveals a serene space. Dark green tiles adorning the walls allows for a beautiful contrast to the white stucco walls. In the hall space adjacent, you will also find a counter table and chair from which you can enjoy the atmosphere

Decorative crossbeams, constructed from natural wood, stretch across the ceiling to bring character to the living space. Slide open the shoji doors to find a “tsubo-niwa, ” characteristic of many traditional Machiya

For guests of more than 3, additional futon bedding will be set in this space

----------------The Living Room & Kitchen----------------
Sharing the same space as the living room is the kitchen. Although designed with a traditional machiya in mind, "Rikyu-an" successfully blends the traditional with the present by utilizing a modern, jet-black counter top and retro-style sink fixtures

We invite our guests to use this fully functional kitchen during their stay. From using locally grown ingredients, preparing light meals in the summer, to cooking "nabe" (hot pot) during the cold winter months…. The possibilities are endless

Kitchen facilities and amenities include: IH plate, microwave, toaster, refrigerator, rice cooker, cooking utensils, and enough dining ware and cutlery for 5 guest

The spacious bathroom, with high sloping ceilings, offers a relaxing space. Constructed using the Japanese Hinoki, a light sand-coloured wood often used when building Noh theaters, palaces, and temples, it will allow for you to relax in luxury. Soak in a bath after a long day of traveling and sightseeing to revive yourself for another day of exploring Kyoto. While taking a bath, look out into the lush, green garden & escape from the busy city life, even if it is just for a moment

There are 2 toilet facilities located in separate areas on the 1st floor

At four and a half square meters, the Japanese bedroom is the perfect example of how a traditional Machiya can utilize even the smallest of nooks and crannies to create a space that is both functional and pleasing to the eyes. There are traditional tea ceremony tools decorating the shelf, a circular window, and dramatic ceiling, which has remained since the house was first built, to create an airy yet cultured feeling

1 futon bedding will be set here

The main bedroom boasts a separate dresser-room and closet for your convenience. To maximize the relaxed & quiet atmosphere, we have taken care to select soft Japanese washi paper and unfinished wood to outfit this room

2 single beds are prepared in this room
