Nuwara Eliya is the highest town in Sri Lanka (2000 meters) with approximately 27, 500 inhabitants. The district capital of the district of Nuwara Eliya stretches hilly over 13 km. Nuwara Eliya is a green city full of forests, tea and vegetable plantations. The most beautiful flowers proliferate like weeds. Ponies are running around freely in the city and the gardens. The climate is pleasant, like Middle Europe in the spring. The normal daily temperature is 18 degrees Celsius; it can sometimes be up to 27 degrees. The night temperatures are at 10 degrees but it can sometimes even go down to 1 degree. Snow does not exist. The city was built by the British as a holiday destination to get away from the extremely humid heat waves in Colombo in April. From this time comes the most scenic Golf Club in Asia, the artificial lake Gregory (air traffic with seaplanes) and the botanical Victoria Garden. Many houses in the city are built in the British colonial style, so Nuwara Eliya is called also Little England. Life here is to call rather contemplative. Although there are many restaurants, hotels and pubs, but a nightlife not take place. There is a daily market with the best and freshest vegetables, as well as a bazaar where very cheap textiles are kept for sale, including world-renowned luxury brands, which are produced legally here in the country but also cheap fakes from China. The district hospital - the General Hospital - is now renovated and got the most modern equipment. Only in the month of April is the city like the moon. Then a kind of carnival takes the Season" instead. There are many exhibitions and music shows. Horse, motorcycle, car and road racings are performed. You will find everywhere booths with food and offers of all kinds. During this period we have even 14 days school holidays. In good weather - what we have at this time mostly - flows semi Colombo to Nuwara Eliya. Many sleep in their cars, because all the guest rooms and even cow sheds are rented out. The majority of the residents are descendants of the Tamils who have been brought by the British as laborers for their tea plantations from southern India into the country. The world's best tea comes from this district. Racial problems do not exist here and the people are much amiable. The nearest railway station is Nanu Oya and is about 10 km away. A bus connects the station to Nuwara Eliya. The bus station is in the center of Nuwara Eliya, about 2 km from the house. Your trips between home and downtown we organize with Three-Wheelers (Tuck-Tucks). Even for trips into the surrounding area, these vehicles are suitable. Vehicles with drivers for round trips or excursions are available in various sizes and configurations. The price depends on the car and the rental period.
