Charming and updated stonecutter`s cottage in Clark Island

  • 2 bedrooms

Located in the village of Clark island in St. George, The Hart Cottage is one of the small cottages built by workers from Europe who came to labor in the many quarries found all over the peninsula. One of largest quarries in Maine was located on Clark Island and employed enough men to support the development of the village of Clark Island, complete with a school, stores, dance halls and more. You will be able to pick out buildings that still exist and once housed a store, a post office, a church and a union hall as you walk to the end of the road toward the causeway. The Hart House is a clean lined, 2 bedroom cottage located within walking distance of a sand beach complete with tide pools, smooth rocks and precious few parking spots assuring lots of privacy. Although privately owned, visitors are able to cross the causeway and go onto the island. The owners of Clark Island allow you to respectfully use the beach, the trails on the island and even to swim in the quarry. The owners of the Hart Cottage have lovingly restored the cottage, leaving some of the original features intact, affording you a glimpse into its past. Entering the cottage through the kitchen, you will notice the original woodwork and simple, basic cabinetry. The high ceilings throughout the house make it seem all the more spacious. The kitchen is fully functional with an electric stove and full sized appliances. Beyond the kitchen is a full bathroom with a shower and a tub. The dining room is off the kitchen with a round table which seats 4-6. The living room is beyond this, with 2 bedrooms off these two rooms. One bedroom is furnished with a queen size bed and the other with 2 twins. The cottage has TV and internet access. There is also an outside shower to rinse off after a day at the beach. The front porch is a perfect area for sitting and enjoying the quietness of the evenings. Behind the cottage is an area with a grill and seating, perfect for a family cookout. Or take a walk to the end of the road just as the causeway starts, and have dinner or drinks at the Craignair Inn, overlooking Wheeler’s Bay. The Inn once served as a boarding house for the quarry workers. This is just a great spot to unwind and breathe in the clean, salty Maine air.
