"KOYU-AN " machiya house ----------------------------------------------------- This is an accommodation facility that enables you to charter and stay at a whole block of “machiya, ” Kyoto's traditional townhouse. It is the closest machiya accommodation to the central area of Gion, and is located in an alleyway connected to popular Gion Hanamikoji Street (where maikos and geikos can be often seen). Popular sightseeing spots include the Yasaka Shrine, with Kodaiji Temple and Kiyomizu Temple being also conveniently accessible by foot. ----- 1st Floor -----LIVING ROOM / GARDEN----- In the “Tokonoma, ” an alcove unique to traditional Japanese houses, you will find many details within the house. The ceiling is designed with a specially prepared wickerwork pattern (made of Japanese cedar), the paper sliding doors are Kyoto-style “karakami, ” (exquisitely crafted paper that is decorated with woodblock prints of hollyhock), and rooms are decorated with traditional Japanese paper lighting. Use this space to relax while looking out into the garden, and utilize the "hori-gotatsu" (a sunken kotatsu table) with which you can sit comfortably even if you are not used to the Japanese tatami-style seating. The horigotatsu is the perfect place to warm up and sit under during the winter. -----KITCHEN----- There are many restaurants around Kyoto, but cooking is also possible with the fully functional kitchen at this machiya. Why not head to the local supermarket to buy some of Kyoto's locally grown ingredients and cook up a delicious meal? ESSENTIALS: refrigerator, microwave, rice cooker, electric kettle, toaster, cutting board, kitchen knife, kettle, pot, pans, and enough dining ware and cutlery for 6 people. -----BATHROOM----- There are 2 bathrooms located on this property. Each bathroom has been fixed with luxurious bathtubs made of the Podocarpus wood. The second floor's bathtub is a comfortable size and equipped with TV to help you have relax. There is also a smaller bathroom on the 1st floor-- a perfect property for larger group of guests. The washroom has a wash basin of "Shigaraki" pottery, ceramic pottery made in the Shigaraki area of Shiga prefecture. Exquisitely made, small details such as this, along with careful preparation adds to the wondrous atmosphere of the Machiya. ----- 2nd Floor -----Japanese-STYLE Bedroom----- Guests will sleep on the second floor of the property where windows are designed with not only shoji paper, but also double-glazed glass to ward off the cold winters, and provide a cool space during the hot summer. Up to 4 guests can sleep in futon bedding on the second floor, and for groups of more than 4, an additional 2 futon bedding will be set in the living room on the first floor. -----JAPANESE-STYLE Lounge Area----- When you push aside the paper sliding door, you will enter into a small and cozy, tatatami-lined den. The paper sliding doors have been designed on a slightly-colored "torinoko" Japanese paper, and using the Kyoto-style karakami of woodblock printing, and decorated with "hyoutan" (gourd cups).
