Situated in the country’s northeastern region is the scenic state of Vermont. The state’s capital is the city of Montpelier. Nicknamed “The Green Mountain State,” Vermont is one of the least populous states in the nation. As its name suggests, the state features an abundance of greenery and impressive mountains such as Stratton Mountain, Bread Loaf Mountain, and Glastenbury Mountain which are part of the Green Mountains. Moreover, Vermont is the United States’ only state that does not feature any buildings that stand taller than 124 feet.
Outdoor recreational activities abound in Vermont. The state is home to some of New England’s largest ski areas. A few notable ski resorts in the state include the Killington Mountain Resort & Ski Area, Sugarbush Resort, and Magic Mountain Ski Area. Marble and granite quarrying are popular pastimes in the towns of Barre and Rutland. In regard to animals, Vermont allows controlled hunting of wild turkeys, deer, moose, and black bear. Vermont’s largest city is Burlington which was the first city in the nation to completely operate using only renewable energy. Burlington is known as a college town since it houses University of Vermont and Champlain College. The city also has a strong local music and arts community. Montpelier, the capital city, is another college-oriented hub with the New England Culinary Institute and Vermont College of Fine Arts. It features three city nature centers including the North Branch River Park and Mill Pond Park.
As a result of being sparsely populated, the state of Vermont boasts numerous cozy small towns. In southern Vermont is Burlington, a historic town with the Bennington Battle Monument, the state’s tallest human-made construction. The landmark pays homage to the American Revolutionary War and marks the site of the Battle of Bennington. Another prominent town is Manchester. This town offers superb shopping centers with its many factory outlets. The Northshire Bookstore, a prominent independent bookstore, is nestled in Manchester as well.
The most renowned lake in the state is Lake Champlain, a freshwater lake straddling the border between the U.S. and Canada. The largest Vermont city at Lake Champlain is Burlington. The lake has a number of islands which include South Hero Island and Isle La Motte. Along Lake Champlain are a few state parks like Sand Bar State Park in Milton and Button Bay State Park in Ferrisburgh. Another noteworthy freshwater lake is Lake Bomoseen. Nearby the western coast of Lake Bomoseen is the Bomoseen State Park situated in the Taconic Mountains.
