The Village of Quogue was founded in 1659 and soon became a popular summer resort community in the 1890s. Focusing always on wholesome activities, Quogue makes for a perfect family-friendly vacation.
Settlers quickly realized the value of the salt marsh meadows near Quogue for grazing cattle, oxen and sheep, but unlike neighboring villages, Quogue also offered direct access to the beach. The original name for the area was Quawquannantucke, which became Coagg, Quago, Quag, Quoag, Quagga — and, finally, Quogue. Until the early 19th century, Quogue was a quiet, pastoral community, but by the mid-1800s, the high demand for whale oil brought commercial whaling to the area. Thanks to cooler temperatures and white sand beaches, families have flocked to Quogue during the summer since 1835. Quogue's popularity has continued to grow since, but it still maintains its small town charm. Many of the original houses still stand!
The Quogue Wildlife Refuge is a 300 acre non-profit nature preserve that was established in 1934. It's open to visitors 365 days a year, and you can walk the seven miles of trails to explore diverse habitats such as forests and ponds as well as rare Dwarf Pines and the Pine Barrens. Many animals with permanent injuries are housed in the Outdoor Wildlife Complex, and admission is free. Another must-do in Quogue is to eat seafood at a seaside restaurant. Locals and tourists alike love Dockers Waterside on the way home from the beach or after a day of kayaking or paddleboarding. The large deck overlooks the bay and provides a perfect view of the sunset, and at there is live music several nights a week throughout the summer.
