The first day trip you must take is one to Mackinac Island! Get on a ferry and be transported back in time to an era before the invention of the car. You can ride bicycles, walk or take a carriage, but there is no driving here! Eat the fudge and check out the different shops. If you plan accordingly and you’re on the island in July then you might just get to see one of the two annual sailboat races to Mackinac Island.Next head south (one hour drive) to Harbor Springs or Petoskey. The two cities are fifteen minutes apart so you can definitely see both in a day. Both offer great shopping! The Mackinaw Trail Winery in Petoskey has a stellar wine tour and is one of the friendliest wineries!
You can head even farther south to Traverse City, which is a phenomenal lake resort community. There are all kinds of shops and restaurants to be discovered here! You can easily spend a day just walking around looking at everything. The drive is about two hours from Mackinaw City, so plan your day accordingly.
