Hana Information

About Hana

Located in the eastern part of Maui, Hana is a beautiful, undeveloped area that is isolated from the rest of the island. Untouched by the major developments that have occurred on the island, Hana maintains its rural charm. With stunning waterfalls, a rugged shoreline, and some of the island’s best beaches, Hana offers visitors a special slice of paradise with its Hawaiian hospitality mixed with a small town atmosphere.

Things to Do in Hana

The Road to Hana is famous for many reasons and is a 64.4-mile stretch of highway that connects Kahului with the town of Hana. There are many great places to stop at during your drive, which is filled with natural beauty. Hasegawa General Store is a fourth generation, family-owned business that was established in 1910 and has been featured in countless articles and travel guides. There was even a song written about it by composer Paul Weston, who was impressed by the variety of merchandise offered, from tropical pareaus and unique books to local foods. Spend a day at some of the beautiful beaches in Hana, including Waianapanapa State Park (a black sand beach famous for its fresh water caves and Hawaiian legends) and Koki Beach, known for its white sandy shores. Make sure to stop at the Hana Cultural Center & Museum, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts related to the history and culture of Hana. The Hana Maui Botanical Gardens features 10 acres of tropical flowers and fruits, and visitors may take self-guided walking tours. Admission costs $3 per person over the age of 12. Another popular attraction is the lava show caves, one of Maui’s greatest natural wonders. Open seven days a week, the cave offers approximately 1/3 mile of unique underground formations. Tours are 40-minutes long and cost $11.95 per person.

Day Trips Near Hana

Paia Town is a unique Hawaiian plantation village that is located four miles past Kahului on the Hana Highway, and is the last town before making your journey to Hana Town. The North Shore town has great restaurants, quaint shops, and Mana Foods – the best natural food store on the island. Another nearby place to visit is Haiku, a small village in the northern part of Maui that is 14 miles east of Kahului. Formerly a thriving pineapple plantation, Haiku has transformed into a rustic community with lots of cute shops and cafes. Don’t forget to check out the nearby Ho’okipa Beach, which is known as the windsurfing capital of the world.

Hana Accommodation

There are many privately owned vacation rentals in Hana, and depending on how rugged you’re willing to go, you can rent a cabin at Wainapanapa State Park with beautiful views. If you choose to stay in North Maui, the main towns are Haiku, Huelo, and Spreckelsville/Paia/Kuau. Paia is the central town of the community, has everything from apartments to multi-million dollar estates for rent, and is a short walking distance to the beach, restaurants, and shopping. Kuau an extension of Paia and home to Ho’ okipa Beach, while Spreckelsville is family-friendly and home to multiple wind surfing beaches. Haiku is another breathtaking neighborhood with large oceanfront estates, bungalows, and plantation-style homes. Huelo is considered part of Haiku and is a laid-back island community surrounded by lush greenery where visitors can enjoy nature and go horseback riding.

The best way to get around Hana is to rent a car so you can travel at your own leisure throughout the island and stop wherever you choose during the drive. For extra fun, rent one of the many jeeps and convertibles that are available.
