About Sausalito

Sausalito is a San Francisco Bay Area city which is eight miles southeast of San Rafael and it is commonly referred to as the “Sutter Creek of the North Bay.” The community receives a large portion of its visitors due to the fact that the city is situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and before the bridge it served as a terminal for ferry and car traffic. Sausalito began as a 19,000 acre land grant to an army captain in 1838 and today is a tourist haven.

Sausalito has an array of things to see and do including the San Francisco Bay Model, and the Bay Area Discovery Museum. The Bay Area Discovery Museum is located just under the Golden Gate Bridge at East Fort Baker which houses multilingual exhibits that includes a wave workshop, a small underwater tunnel and a large outdoor play area with a shipwreck. In addition, Plaza Vina del Mar is near the ferry terminal that is surrounded by 14 foot tall elephant statues from the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition.

Every second Wednesday of the month, visitors can tour art studios and galleries along the Bridgeway. Visitors can also visit the Sausalito Art Festival every Labor Day weekend. Sausalito also has great eateries including Angelinos (Italian, home-made pasta), Arawan (Thai cuisine), Fred’s Coffee Shop (one of the city’s most popular eateries), Sartaj (Indian food), Spinnaker (seafood), and Michelin rated Sushi Ran which serves up incredible sushi and modern Japanese cuisine.
