Things to do in La Jolla

There are plenty of things to do in the La Jolla and San Diego areas to keep you busy during your vacation. Walk along Prospect Street, where you will find many charming boutiques and restaurants. There are beautiful beach areas in La Jolla where you can soak up the sun and enjoy the waves of the Pacific Ocean. La Jolla Shores is probably the most popular spot in the area and is a great beach for walking. Located in north La Jolla, this beach has some of the gentlest waves of any beach in San Diego is is especially great for learning how to surf. The beach is also notable for being near the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus and the home of the Scripps Pier. This is one of the only beach boat launching areas in La Jolla, so it's a popular spot for kayaking and surfing.

The La Jolla Cove is another very popular spot. You can enjoy swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling in this cove set against beautiful sea cliffs. The water is lovely here and you can spot orange Garibaldi fish swimming near you. The bluffs above the beach are grassy, making a great spot for picnics. The cove is part of the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, so fishing, surfing and boogie boarding are not allowed. In the summer months, you may find many seals and sea lions lounging on the rocks around the cove as well, which is interesting to see. Windansea Beach is another great beach to visit in La Jolla, even though it doesn’t have any facilities. Other than the beaches, there are some great things to do in La Jolla as well. Visit the Birch Aquarium where you can see many different sea creatures and learn about ocean science. For shopping, be sure to hit up Girard Avenue and Prospect Street where you’ll find most of the best shops in the area. If you’re interested in golfing, the La Jolla and San Diego area has some of the best courses in America including the world-renowned Torrey Pines Golf Courses, La Jolla Country Club and more.

Day trips from La Jolla

There are some fantastic day trips you can take from La Jolla. You can take an hour drive north to the great city of Temecula, which is the premier wine country destination in Southern California. There are great wineries like Wilson Creek Winery, Leoness Cellars, Wiens Family Cellars, Ponte Winery among dozens of others that are all very enjoyable for touring, tasting and relaxing. There are all kinds of fun and unique wine tours that are offered in Temecula and are worth checking out. Temecula also has a lot of hot air balloon companies where you can go up and see the vineyards and the beautiful Southern California countryside from up above. You could take an hour drive east to Mount Laguna where you can enjoy the outdoors hiking and taking in incredible scenery. There is also an observatory there for great stargazing. Head to Los Angeles for the day if you’d like to experience everything that the city has to offer, or north along the coast to beautiful, smaller towns with great beaches. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could go south of the border for an overnight trip and get a very small and introductory taste of Mexico.
