Arguably the most beautiful beach town in the United States, Del Mar is a small seaside town in the north section of San Diego County. It has Bavarian architecture and is characterized by old cypresses and clean sand, with views up to the coast to Orange County, California. Del Mar is a perfect destination for romantic getaways and family vacations. The beautiful beach town has an array of activities including the Del Mar Racetrack and San Diego County Fair. The beach town is also known for its beach and ocean water sports in nearby San Diego and La Jolla.
Del Mar is just as famous for its shops and restaurants and at the corner of 15th Street and Camino del Mar, visitors will enjoy Del Mar Plaza, an elegant collection of high end shops and restaurants. These shops are a great way to spend an afternoon when visitors aren’t in the mood for the beach.
The San Diego County Fair happens on an annual base in July and is a preview and beginning to the Del Mar Racing Season. For those that have no interest in horses, the fair has plenty of other activities to do and the fair has consistently been in the top 10 for fairs in the United States.
Visitors can also go whale watching in Del Mar as twice a year there is a migration of California Gray Whales off the coast of the town. In addition, every afternoon before sunset, color hot air balloons are let off into the sky which provide a spectacular view for visitors.
Neighboring San Diego also has a great deal of activities and places to visit such as Balboa Park, SeaWorld San Diego, San Diego Zoo, Seaport Village, and Maritime Museum of San Diego.
Borrego Springs, located in northeast San Diego is a place for visitors who seek isolation and intimacy. The town is surrounded by the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, making it the county’s only desert community. Located about 30 miles north of San Diego is Legoland California which is an amusement park in Carlsbad that is mainly targeted towards families with young children (ages 2-12). The amusement park is based on Legos and has a great deal of hands-on exhibits built from Legos. The themed resort also has a SeaLife Aquarium that is designed to teach children about the sea and its inhabitants.
For those visitors that want to experience some authentic Mexican culture, they can hop over the border to the Mexican city of Tijuana (passports needed). Tijuana is a vibrant city with around 1.3 million people and a great nightlife, especially in the downtown Zona Rio. Visitors can take a taxi across the border or simply walk across.
Del Mar has an array of accommodations for visitors to enjoy. Visitors can choose from intimate hotels, inns, bed and breakfast establishments, and vacation rentals. The best option for your stay, of course, is to be as close to the beach as possible. Look for accommodations on or nearby Camino Del Mar, which runs close to the water and has many great restaurant options.
Since Del Mar is a small beach community, visitors are able to walk around or rent bicycles. There are also plenty of taxis available for those that don’t have a personal vehicle. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner also stops one mile north of Del Mar in Solana Beach and is an easy way to get to both San Diego and Los Angeles.
