Cathedral City Information

About Cathedral City

Cathedral City, known to locals as “Cat City,” is the second largest city in the Coachella Valley of Southern California. Named after rock formations reminiscent of a cathedral, the town was founded in the 1920s as a housing subdivision but only incorporated in 1981.

Recognized as one of the “most livable cities” in the country by the United States Conference of Mayors, Cathedral City offers affordable housing and low crime rates, ranked with similarly sized cities in Southern California. The city also boasts lots of family activities and festivals year-round, making it an ideal spot for a vacation in any season.

Portions of the land in Cathedral City are within limits of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, which also extends into 6,700 acres of Palm Springs. Cathedral City is located in Riverside County, which is filled with hiking trails and parks to explore.

Frank Sinatra fans are highly encouraged to visit Cathedral City. Take a trip down Frank Sinatra Drive, just 15 minutes from his former home of Palm Springs. You can also pay homage to Sinatra’s gravesite at Palm Springs Cemetery on the north end of Cathedral City. There are also many beautiful hiking trails within the city limits. Araby Trail is one of Cathedral City’s best. It’s a hilly and narrow trail that takes about two hours to hike.

For a fun and educational trip, head to the Palm Springs Air Museum just outside Cathedral City. The museum features aircraft from World War II (one of the world’s largest collections, according to the museum), the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Take the kids and learn more about aviation history.

VillageFest is another Palm Springs treat open for visitors. The “festival” features a street fair every Thursday night in downtown Palm Springs. A blend of a farmer’s market and a craft fair, VillageFest brings locals and tourists into downtown Palm Springs to enjoy festive activities as well as regular downtown businesses. Dogs are welcome!
