About Gibraltar

Located on the southern coast of Spain, Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory that was originally settled in the Middle Ages by the Moors, and later on Spain. It became a British Territory in 1713, and is known for being home to very special sites and attractions including its Great Siege Tunnels, making it one of the most unique destinations in the Mediterranean.

Things to Do in Gibraltar

Many people come to Gibraltar to see the Barbary Macaques, which are the only wild monkey population in Europe. These cute, tailless monkeys can be found at Apes Den (aka Queens Gate) or Prince Philip’s Arch. The Great Siege Tunnels are one of the most popular sites that people come to see, and are a labyrinth of tunnels that were built in 1782. St. Michael’s Cave is open to visitors and is now an auditorium for various concerts and performances with a seating capacity of 400. The Moorish Castle Complex features various buildings, fortified walls, gates, and The Tower of Homage and The Gate House. For the past six centuries, people traveling to Gibraltar from the mainland have been greeted by the impressive sight of the great square tower up on the hillside, and the castle kept the townspeople safe back in 1540 when Gibraltar was under attack by Turkish pirates. Many people come to Gibraltar to go shopping on Main Street, which is the center point of Gibraltar’s commercial district. Here you can find everything from traditional stores to well-known brands and chains. Another popular place to visit is the Gibraltar Public Market outside Casemates Square, which is an indoor market where you can purchase everything from vegetables and fish to local dishes. Another must-see is the Europa Point Trinity Lighthouse, which is located at the southernmost point of Gibraltar that serves as a waypoint for passing vessels.
