Restaurants and Bars: Both Porto Maurizo and Oneglia have a good selection of Restaurants and bars. Further inland can be found many “agriturismo” accredited restaurants. Many of the Restaurants and bars adjacent to the Marinas are fantastic for people-watching, as well as offering a wide selection in tastes. There is an extensive list at the apartment, whilst below are a few restaurants we have visited and found them to be excellent:- 1. Censin da Bea Via Guglieri 14 18021 Borgomaro Imperia A Restaurant with an “Agriturismo” accreditation, using local “in season” produce. Booking essential – be prepared to spend the whole evening there. Expect to pay €25 - €30 for this wonderful experience. 2. Pizzeria Hobo`s Via Rambaldo 40 Porto Maurizo Probably the best Pizzas in town 3. L`Osteria dai Pippi Via Dei Pellegrini 9 Porto Maurizo Booking essential – small but cosy. 4. Al Santuario Montegrazie Booking only – local “in season”produce, mainly fish Located in the next village, opposite the Church. 5. Dineabbe Via Roma 2 18027 Lucinasco Another Restaurant with an “Agriturismo” accreditation, using local “in season” produce. Booking essential – be prepared to spend the whole evening there. 6, Il Gabbiano - Spaghetteria Via Roma, 32 San Lorenzo al Mare Imperia Small but cosy - friendly staff - enjoy a bottle of Pigato when you eat here. The best Spaghetteria we have come across in the area. Shops: There is a good bakery, Post Office and Chemist, at Caramagna, all within a ten minutes drive from the apartment, as well as a supermarket (Conad) – sells just about everything! Good fresh fish counter. Many of the local towns have daily Markets (not Mondays): Porto Maurizo - In the main shopping centre, Via Felice Cascione, next to the Opera House, there is an Indoor Market every day. On Thursday an outside Market takes place near the Duomo. Oniglia - An indoor market takes place every day just one block inland from the Fishing Harbour. A large Market, in the streets around the indoor Market above, takes place on Saturdays, well frequented by the local populace! Ventimiglia - A very large mixed Market on Saturday and a flower Market on a Friday. Recommend the train, if you wish to travel to the Markets in Ventimiglia. Culture: Very much linked to the hilly hinterland rather than the sea which is often seen as a threat from the outside world. Hence the hardwork culture, the slightly diffident approach and the genuine love for the simple things in life. No great displays of wealth or pretentious buildings but solid values and a sincere love for one's roots ( the Nobel prize poet Montale is a perfect example). Attractions: Duomo - Porto Maurizo Olive Oil Museum - Oneglia. Descriptions are in English Maritime Museums - Porto Maurizo Fish Market - Oneglia, not as large as it once was, but still worth a visit. Beaches - Borgo Marina, Diano Marina, Oneglia and San Lorenzo al Mare, to name but a few Marinas - Porto Maurizo, Oneglia, both of which have been recently extensively extended as has San Lorenzo. Café Culture - There are numerous cafes in both Porto Maurizo and Oneglia, many in the arcaded parts, adjacent to the shops. Ideal for those interested in people watching. An extensive list can be found in the Apartment, which includes those above. Days out: Imperia - The Old hill town of Porto Maurizo, with its yacht haven and sandy beaches, contrasts with the chic, arcaded shops in its twin, Oneglia - a 15 minute drive from the apartment. San Lorenzo al Mare - A coastal village with a fishing Harbour and small Yacht Marina and sandy beaches – ideal for families. 25 minute drive from the apartment. Dolceacqua - Famous for its red wine, or, “Vino di Dolceacqua” and Castle. Apricale - A stunning hill town, where the houses appear to hang from the cliff face. Ventimiglia - On the French/Italian border, the old town of Ventimiglia has a superb Friday market, if you are looking for bags, clothes, Parmesan Cheese and Olive Oil. Genoa - An Art Historians paradise. Also contains the largest Aquarium in Europe. Christopher Columbus, the 'Great Navigator, ' is Genoa's most famous son, with a section of the Genoa's Maritime Museum devoted to his exploits. Cinque Terre - The 5 villages, on the coast, that seem to dramatically cling to the very edge of vertical cliffs. Overnight stay recommended. Monte-Carlo - Famous for its casino, historical palace and Aquarium. Nice and The French Riviera - Another art lovers paradise - The French Riviera also offers great daytrips - Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Aix-En-Provence are all within easy reach of Imperia. There is an extensive list of places, in the Apartment, to visit, offering our further recommendations!
